I remember a local family in the early 1960's using VW campers for day to day use and frequent holidays in Wales and the Lake District. The parents were both teachers and they had quite q few children but they all fitted into their colourful campers! I recall accompanying my dad when collecting yet another engineless (and almost brakeless!) shell from a nearby village for upgrading. I was in the tow vehicle, another VW and remember the look of horror on the face of the "towee" ! Could not do this now...............
My parents at one time had a Bedford CF with a 2.3 ltr diesel and autobox. It had a raising roof and sparse but comfortable interior. At retirement they had many adventures all over Germany, the Rhinelands and Austria.
What memories do you have of classic campervans? Any Thames, Bedford or Transit lovers out there?

BMC B-series 1500 petrol engine; GVW around 2 tons. It was a tad slow.
I went on a "Paralanian National Rally" in 1998; there were 7 I think, maybe 8. The pretty young thing who appears in the original brochure (which I still have) attended, as did several men who built them in Bradford in the late 1950s/early 60s.
Alec,
now that is a very special campervan! thanks for posting. I bet they were lovely when new.
A dear friend, now sadly departed had a Commer van which looked similar ( the cab end only). he once described it as having an "anti brake, locking system" ( a play on words. ABS anti lock braking system). You just have to laugh.
I would love a van like yours.

I cant rember dates but I would think it would be in the sixtes my parents hired a motorhome. It was a Comer with a lift up roof. The day my dad brought the van home and it parked next to the coop a couple of streets away from our house and I slept in it for some reason. Next day my sister droped the keys down a cellar grating outside one of the shops. Not A good start but we had a couple of weeks touring. The only places I can rember were Lincoln, Farnbourgh Air Show and Wells next the Sea.Considering we lived in the North West Riding at the time we must have covered a few miles, two adults three kids and a dog. The memory must have stuck with me as we now own a motorhome.
