LesleyG I have to agree wholeheartedly, my transporter was so nice to drive and park I used it as daily transport as well, which in my opinion does a vehicle the world of good. Otherwise you un-mothball it every few months and take on a long trip and wonder why things go wrong mechanically.

Mine was an early one , it was 7 years old when I bought it. The 1.6litre golf diesel engine was however bad news, got a very bad name in the motorhome owners and the motor trade,  went BANG very easily, was an arm and a leg to put right, mine kept the thermostat closed at the beginning of a journey, engine began to overheat , I stopped immediately ,red light flickering on water temp guage, still too late £586.87 was the bill . That was back in July 1990.

The 1.7 litre was a totally different, reliable engine, I learned the hard way. Of those folk now with the new 2.5tdi from what I hear it a great engine.

Still loved it but the engine was a major sickener.

Oh and don't buy an early Mercedes Vito 2.2 diesel, my mate bought one new through the proper VW dealership, broke his heart and his bank balance .
