When on hook up neither batteries are charging, checked voltage of both batteries reading around 12.6 volts, switch engine on and readings are 14 volts, On hookup both batteries show no increase. Checked fuses near hab battery and engine battery all ok.consumer unit in van has a red indicator which doesn't light but all the 240 van electrics are working. Any help would be much appreciated.Van is a self build(not me)professionally done.

Do you mean it was charging & now it is not? Or has it never charged? If that is the case it might not even have a charger fitted. It has a split charge relay that allows leisure battery to charge while engine is running & it obviously has mains electric hookup but may not have a charger. The charger usually only charges leisure battery while on ehu, not engine battery.

If no charger is fitted you can either fit a caravan/motorhome transformer/charger unit or the easy/cheap way is just to use a separate charger to charge battery as needed while on ehu.

As far as I know it has never charged on ehu we have only just started staying out in it and both batteries ran down overnight while on ehu and the engine wouldn't start, 60 mile drive back home and both batteries were back up to 12.5 volts. I has assumed that ehu would charge the batteries. thanks for replying.

It sounds like you haven't even got a split charge system - just the two batteries connected directly together. If so, you would be wise to fit an isolator switch to prevent your starter battery going flat when not on EHU.

I do have a split charge system which works well when engine is running I think you are right about an isolater switch, I found a fuse near the engine battery which when removed prevents any drain so a switch in the cab would be good.

If both batteries went flat, you either don't have a split charge system or it is not working properly - the split charge relay should isolate the starter battery when the engine isn't running, thus only allowing the leisure battery to go flat.

What is the voltage when the engine is running at about 1500 rmp (Just above idle)? It should be around 14 volts. Does the fridge switch off in 12 volt position ok? If not then that would run the battery down as it can take some 130 watts.
