This might sound a bit daft but do you have to keep a window or roof light open to have a solar panel. We are no longer able to keep our Rapido connected to mains electric when not using it. We have two leisure batteries, a category 1 alarm and a tracking system which means the batteries have to kept fully charged.
Do you mean the portable and "suitcase" type of panels?..
I've read that they don't charge very well(if at all?)through glass. No idea how true that is though..we've got one but I think using it, is a bit of "kidology" myself..(..although when on festival sites for 4-7 day stints in the summer, if the van's control panel is to be believed, it does seem to put some juice back in..bit it's usually just plonked on the roof, out through the skylight )
Prices of "proper" panels are coming right down now...so if storing it away from home is going to be a long term thing, them getting a proper installation may be worth looking at..?
If you do just use a portable panel, just plugged into a "cigar lighter", make sure the socket is live with the ignition off!...as a good many won't be....
(..I fitted two additional, fused sockets to our van..one to the vehicle battery, one to the leisure battery).
Now with a name like that I would like to know what part of Italy you from, my second son is called VincEnzo, , as for the answer get the best panel money can buy/fit and forget, that is the beauty of solar panels, I wild camp in France and Spain when travelling to my destination and I definitely would not do without one.
The answer to your question is that the panel is fixed to the roof,we have a Tracker and alarm and two colour tvs one in the bedroom and one in the living room,we do use aires and campsites in Europe, but most weekends in a field with no hook up,we are there on friday and leave on monday, and we have never had a problem, the best item that we had fitted, hope this helps.H.
I never use hook up wild camp for long periods
have a 120 watt panel fitted to the roof by corner mounting brackets stikaflex glued to the roof and stainless screws power cable through the roof
which powers a 10 amp regulator and a 100 amp battery
never had the system run flat and by 12 midday in the summer and a little longer in the autumn its fully charged again.
Its almost paid for itself as my generator stays in the shed.
Best thing i ever did
120 watt is a good size as it equates to max 10 amps
the control regulators are under a tenner.
Enzo
Best thing you can do fit them mine is on its second van
just a tip i was told only use water to clean the panel no polish detergent etc.
And on a fun note dont park under trees they dont like to be in the shade just good light.
You wont regret it.
Just start worrying how much gas you have because the electric is taken care of.
Wohhhh apologies then, I would never in a million years think of a girl named Enzo, but there you go its a funny world out there, take care and enjoy life, you only have the one.
