having tried out our nv200 Nevada we have decided that we can indeed use it as our only vehicle. Our Fiesta is sold and we shall now try out using the campervan and our caravan especially for longer breaks away. We did consider part exchanging the car for an electric runabout but the research put me off the idea. Battery hire costs, I feel are prohibitive. You can read more on my homepage
------------- cramming for my finals in the twilight zone
My parents used their pop-top VW campervan as their sole vehicle in Argyll. And took long far-away holidays in it, using sites with toilets & showers. No caravan by choice. I wouldn't choose to use our Autosleeper motorhome as the everyday run-around - its length is the same as an estate car, but I find it wide-bellied, it's noisy (and thirsty) above 55 mph, and due to its height we have to plan the parking to avoid car parks with gantries, and multi-storeys are not possible. (See parking it in Inverness? nightmare.)
My dad tried using his campervan as a daily vehicle for work commuting...he gave up after a couple of months. Parking and fuel consumption were the two main issues. Also, he worried about it being vandalised, although I don't believe that actually happened.
Good decision about the electric runabout in my view. They just don't make sense to me when considering the battery life and cost, availability of charging stations, range, extortionate cost of the vehicle and environmental issues of battery production, and disposal. Also the environmental issues of an any new car.
The only time they make any sense to me is in the central London congestion charging zone. Other than that much cheaper and planet friendly to recycle and use an old small car.
We've used a campervan as our only vehicle for over 10 years now.
No problems except at height barrier car parks, which we get around by researching parking if we are going somewhere new.
The advantages are you can always stop and make a brew (especially useful if traffic is bad) and you always have somewhere to kip if you miss the last bus home or overindulge
i use a renault master lwb high top camper for my daily commute only thing is i avoid car park barriers thats its only fault, its height which i work around when going out
And I'd endorse the helpful comment about insurance - I cannot use our motorhome for site visits relating to my work out in the countryside. We could only get insurance for domestic & pleasure, not for business use, though we did try several companies.
