Hi
We have been campers for years, we have always had tents and a caravan once but decided to try a campervan. We have just bought a Ford Transit 100L high top campervan 1989, just wondering if anyone knows where we can find out as much information about these particular vans and if the is an awning available to get for this van.
You can try a google search, I'm sure there must be a club out there for trannies. and yes if you take a look on ebay there are loads of awnings that will fit your pocket and the van
There are several online forums for motorhomes so it may be worth joining one of them... Full of knowledge...
Re getting an awning... Be careful that the area you intend to fit it to its strong enough.
One thing you could consider is a driveaway awning... Which fits against the side of your van... Can easily double your sleeping accommodation and give you a large extra area for socialising.
If the van is new to you make sure you have had the gas system checked. If you bought it from a dealer they really should have done this as part of a Habitation check when you bought it.
Enjoy your new van!
Would echo what others have said about the gas appliances.....
Is it a factory built conversion or a self-build?..because it it's the former, it'll be the "converter" that you will sometimes need to be "searching" under(rather than just "Transit campervan")..
Unless you desperately require the space, I would hold back on getting an awning to start with..and just wait to see how you end up using the van..
Our first van was a Transit hi top(A/S Duetto) and within the first few months we had bought a Movelite drive-away awning(never used in anger), a caravan porch awning(cheap and used quite a lot, IF "staying put") and an EasiCanopy tarp(very handy for quick shelter)..and had a Fiamma windout (biggest waste of out money ever!!).
I would agree with pepe63, I had a wind out Fiamma, Must have used it at least 4 times, just not worth the investment, and if the wind grabs it when you turn your back, it will wrap it round your van!
Re the awning. It very much depends on what sort of camping you'll be doing and where.
If your preference is to stay on a site for several days then a drive away awning might be best. These have a tunnel that can be fitted to the rain gutter on the van, if you have one (if not they are quite easy to fit), or by straps going over the van.
If you intend to move about a bit then a wind out awning, though expensive, is convenient. They come in various lengths but you will need to check that a suitable fixing kit is available for your Transit. Fiamma and Omnistor both make these, and there are several second hand ones on ebay. I wouldn't bother with a full 'safari room' type awning that you can attach to the wind out awning though, as we find it too much faff.
We have had both and prefer the wind out awning as it takes no time to put up/take down, plus as it's really only a canopy so you still get the feeling of being 'outdoors' but with some shelter, which is particularly useful in hot climates. I made a couple of 'sides' for ours that we put on the side or the front to give extra sun protection when it is very hot. As has been stated though, you do have to be very careful about use in windy conditions.
Thnks for your replies it's appreciated.
My campervan is 25 years old so will get my husband to check the gas. I think we are gonna be travelling around and not staying out for long in one place and the van is big enough for us to basically sit in and have food etc. I want to carry as lest stuff as possible.
We have a VW California, which lacks a bathroom. The wind out awning is to us essential, esspecialy when combined with the new type WINDBLOCKER sides and front. It more than doubles the living space and is great for a quick shower when wild camping.(we use a big flexible tub as a shower tray and a 12v plugin type shower, Gail goes first then I recycle water from the bucket followed by fresh water for final rinse, then pour into waste tank)
I find when you have a bigger coach built van the awning is little used but for the smaller van conversions it is essential extra space.

you could try something like this coupled with a wind break...simple to set up and gives a bit more space
Yes, I'd agree with that(..as our Easicanopy can be a bit big and flappy sometimes!)..
Although not always easy to store/lug about, we also use one of the Quechua base tents(used along with a tarp/canopy).
We have just got a talbot auto-sleeper harmony high top our first campervan as found sleeping in tents with two westies is a bit to much and cold , so as the new camper has a pull out awning ,i decided to get a drive away awning to fit the side or back doors ,with sealed ground sheet and a dog ramp so the boys can go out with out them going walk about , i think that should do the trick
