I have a 1995 2.1 diesel Renault Trafic camper that I would like to fit power steering to.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be the most suitable conversion to go for??
Its either finding all the parts to fit under the vehicle(rack, pump pipework etc) or go for an electrical conversion( as I have seen on you tube).
The foresee the problem with trying to get original power steering parts is the age of the camper and whether there were "donor" vehicles that could have the right parts!!!!
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Most of the people in the Renault Trafic Motorhome Register have had the electronic power steering done for around £600.

Are you a member of the RTMR? Lots of help from other members if you are.

You could look for a scrapped Traffic with P/S and do a swap. Beware though. Renault P/S parts are something of a nightmare and expensive to fix. I needed a new rack for my work van and was told "£600 exchange plus VAT for parts only.....and there was a four month waiting list." Eventually bought all the seals bearings and O rings from a bearing specialist for less than £200 all in and did the job with a mate over a weekend.

Pre 2001 Trafics with power steering are very thin on the ground. You'd be lucky to find one. Then you would have to strip all the parts off, rack, pump resovoir & pipework and perhaps the steering column. To be safe, you would need to check and perhaps repair these parts before fitting them to your van.

Once fitted, you would then need to have the tracking checked / set.

Going the electric route is much simpler and could work out cheaper.

As Nora says, quite a few RTMR members have had this conversion done and all are really pleased with the results.

You can get a DIY kit of parts for £400

Thanks for the replys.I will probably go down the electronic route as it seems to be quite a good option.
