My camper van is nearly ready but for the 12v fridge conection. it was conected to the van fues box and came on every time the the the engine was on which drained the starter batery and made cold starting hit and miss. The mains unit has a fridge in and fride out conecters on the back, but I am unshore of how to wire this. Is the fride Out to go to the frige, if so what conects to the fridge  IN conecter

Hello again Landsailor,  sounds like youv'e been busy.

The fridge being on when engine running is usual and shouldn't drain your starter battery due to alternator charging as you drive.

I think we may need to know what mains unit you have to be sure of connections.  The live feed to the fridge is normaly controlled by a relay which only makes a connection when the engine is running.

The fridge should not be connected directly to the fuse box, but shoulde be connected to a relay connected to the dynamo/alternator. These are available from any camping/caravan accessory shop. They are wired into the 1) the ignition warning light wire 2) live feed 3) earth 4) and ideally a liesure battery non earth side. I would recommend a separate liesure battery powered by the relay, with the fridge and all other 12v camping accessories wired to this.

The mains unit (240v mains hook up) will have a separate line for the  fridge as it will be powerd all the time when hooked up. You need to loop the input connection (from hook up socket) to "fridge in", and then wire the fridge up to "fridge out" on the mains unit.

Thanks,

Steven & Bust,

The fridge is all-most as old as me and is gas/12V no mains.

A friend who fits out cannal boat recomends if I realy need an all singing dacing modle to go for a proper compresser fridge, as the current needed on 12v is far lower than on the old hear elliment type.

Has any one got this type of fridge in their camper  or caravan?

Hope to some of you at High Laning next week end.

Hi Landsailor

I would go for a compressor fridge. We had a Waeco compressor fridge in our old van and that was much better than the fridge in our new van - a 3 way Dometic model. The compressor fridge ran happily for 3-4 days when powered by the leisure battery (85Ah) and you didn't have to worry about switching the power source from gas to 12V to mains depending upon what you were doing. The greatest advantage (IMHO) was being able to leave the fridge running on ferry crossings which kept the beer nice and cold on arrival.
