Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about solving problems with Truma Combi water and space heaters, please?

Mine is on a newly purchased second hand 2011 registered CI Carioca 100 Euro - this worked during my final handover and only slightly one cold evening. Since then I have not been able to fill the boiler with water.

When operating the water pump with a full water-tank full, it all poured out over a period of about 2 hours though a plastic outfall pipe located under the boiler. I repeatedly turned the blue lozenge shaped lever on the top of the black valve unit (located in the rear cargo space beside the boiler) to the only 2 positions it will move to, without any effect.

I was thus unable to backfill the boiler hot water tank.

I also opened up the hot/cold water taps to ensure that all air was flushed through the water-pipework, as advised on hand-over.

This alarmed me and stopped me from trying to operate the air-blown heater system on 2 cold nights and I ended my trip for this reason.

I have heard from a warden at a camp park that these 'dump' valves (which automatically open to drain the boiler at 4DegreesC to prevent boiler frost damage) are unreliable and should be replaced with a a manually operated valve - or a pre-heater unit should be installed.

Any further advice would be much appreciated!

Can't be of specific help but we had a problem with a manual drain valve which basically would become stuck open and drain out - it takes a while to drain if the taps to the sinks aren't open; a squirt of WD40 solved it.

Hi...

We had the same "problem" when we first bought our previous van...initially I thought it was a bl**dy stupid idea...and I did toy with swapping for a manual/toggle dump valve..

BUT..I ended up just using an "R" clip that I had, re-shaped slightly to slip around the stem of the valve, to keep it closed/up.

(...although a "H" or "Hairpin" clip would be better).

..if you look at the valve stem close, you'll probably see there is a groove at the correct level. This method worked well enough for the four years plus that we had the van..

Edit: Although having reread your post(properly this time ),it sounds like you may have a different vale to the one we had....

Ours was like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Truma-Electric-Dump-Valve-12mm-/180762616374?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item2a164aa236

Is yours like this one shown on here?

http://www.truma.com/int/en/water-systems/accessories-water-system.php

..if it is....and turning the blue knob doesn't stop it from dumping, assuming that it isn't faulty(?),then maybe swapping for an "older" manual valve is the way to go then...?

Greetings,

Our Dump Valve, dump preventer, already installed at great expense in our "new to us" Hobby is a dual purpose affair.

It's a clothes peg!!!

Have you tried the having the heating on for a while to prevent the frost valve opening?

Re: Clothes peg(lucky or otherwise )

Judging by scotfree's(the OP) reference, to a "blue  lozenge", it doesn't sounds as if his valve is of the type that will work on(...the drop down,"plunger" type).

His sounds like the one shown in the second link I posted above....

http://www.truma.com/int/en/water-systems/accessories-water-system.php

and as he: " repeatedly turned the blue lozenge shaped lever on the top of the black valve unit"   and it had no affect ,then one can probably assume either,

a)The "auto-dump" in designed to over ride any manual intervention

 or

b) It should be able to be "over-ridden" but it's faulty....

If it is okay..and just isn't meant to be "manually" held closed , then I'd probably look at swapping it for the simple, yellow toggle type...

I know the intension of these valves is to stop frost damaging the boiler but they do(or ours did!)seem to "dump" even when they was only a slight  "chill" in the air!..and  I wouldn't want to need to keep  the heating on, just to keep a valve closed..

Dear pepe63 for your two replies and everyone else for theirs. Glad you like my address Jaiash!

Very helpful.

Yes, as you'd thought, my Truma boiler water dump valve is like the one in your second link.

Based on your comments I'll go ahead and see if the best solution is n't to replace this item with an older type or one with a toggle valve switch. And buy a couple of clothes pegs too!

As replacing the present item with a new valve of a similar type seems likely to give repeated problems......

I agree also with pepe63 that sadly the kind suggestion from David Klyne to heat up the habitation space to ensure the valve acts as intended - is not really practical - or affordable!

Thanks again all!
