Hi,

I have never posted in this section before so please forgive my ignorance ...lol.

My brother asked me if I could give him any advice about buying a small (one or two berth camper...based on a Berlingo or similar) I said that I havn't got a clue, but I know some folk who do!

So, in esence, a small conversion I guess, with a budget of £5000 or so.

Any thoughts?

Ones to steer clear of, or ones to aim for....he is a smart bloke, but like me, knows nowt about this subject.

Thanks for any suggestions.

If he wants a microcamper then Berlingo base is his best bet. Go for 1.9diesel, slow but cheaper to repair than hdi diesels. If he wants a bigger van based conversion then really anything in his price range he can find in good nick, for that price it will be old, mid 90s so its about condition not make. Most popular for camper is VW T4 so spares availability probably less of an issue than other vans of same age.

Drivelodge do a nice conversion on Berlingo. They are based at Cross Hills near Keighley in Yorkshire. With your own van they could probably pull in a conversion for you within budget, Hope this helps.

There are Kangoo conversions out there too. However, tell him to have a look at the Romahomes - purpose built campers which have been manufactured for quite a few years now, so they've perfected the layout with two single beds behind the driver & passenger seat, and the kitchen at the rear. I think they're lovely

I was looking at a Romahome parked at our local Asda the other day, looked like a nice neat little camper great for just one or two people. The lady who had it was a solo camper with a dog and said she absolutely loved the van.

Romahome in his price range will most likely be Citroen C15 base with old technology XUD diesel, so cheap maintenance & ok for megamileage but check for cambelt change & if not recent ensure this is done asap. Plenty on ebay so worth a look.

If he can't find something already converted an option might be to buy an unconverted berlingo/partner/kangoo etc and fit an Amdro Boot Jump kit.

Regarding secondhand conversions if he ever comes across a Wheelhome conversion it will be worth looking at - they've been doing the small vehicle conversions for a long time and have won numerous awards over the years for their innovative designs. I've also been quite impressed by the quality of Danbury's Doblo conversion when I've had a look at them.

Never quite sure if we're allowed to mention other forums, but the Small Motorhome Forum could be worth checking out for more ideas.
