Hi
Advice much apreciated please.
I know there is lots of advice on here regarding awnings but can't find an answer to my specific question.
We have just bought a toyota granvia wellhouse conversion (love it). It came with an awning but this isn't big enough for us when all of us camp. We have two teenagers who won't be with us for overnights or short weekends but will be doing our 2 week summer hols. So need two bedrooms.
The awning we have is an outdoor revolution movelite, think its the classic, not put it up yet, we are off for two nights to try it out next weekend.
First question does anyone know if it's possible to add a universal annex or two to this so we don't need to buy another awning?

If not we will need to get another awning. Our van has no awning rail and is 265cm high. I like the way the outdoor revolution ones come as standerd set up to throw straps over the top.
I am a bit confused as to which height to buy though as they either fit up to 240 or from 240 to 290 cm. (obviously awning rail but does this change if throwing straps over) If we are throwing straps over I am thinking we would be best with the higher one as surley not enough material in ones that only fit to 240.
If we got one of the higher ones would we then be able to addapt it to fit if we decided to have an awning rail fitted later? This would probably be at about the 2m height. Anyone done this can the sides just be pegged wider?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Alf

Hi Alf,

Would it not be both cheaper and preferable to the teenagers to buy a pair of
small pop-up tents (Quechua from Decathlon are great) - they take up little room and the teenagers can get their lie-in in peace.

It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.

Hi..

I would agree with the above option(..that is of cause, unless they are only just teenagers and you'd prefer to keep then "in house"...?

If you really wanted to explore the annex route, then obviously you'll need to establish exactly what it is you've got...have you had a look on the OR website?

http://www.outdoor-revolution.com/

A friend of ours, uses a Kyham  motordome, which has an annex..but I don't think they're cheap(...especially when you already have an awning).

Hi
Thanks for replies. I had thought about the pup tent idea and if they were sharing a two man would probably have done this but they are boy n girl age 14 and 16 so won't be sharing. Not sure I would want them on their own. We used to usea small tent under our folding camper but this had door into awning so seemed safer. Considered tents in awning but it would leave no living space. ( Can't trust weather in uk enough to have to sit outside all time) As the awning was free with camper I don't mind buying another or annex just wanted advice on which was best or possible option before I buy.
I know we have a tent style movlite OR awning but think its older model prob about 2010, doesn't seem to match any on website exactly. Once we get it up this weekend I will have a better idea.
I like the khyma motorhome sleepers, the pole n sleeve one at £200 is deffo an option but will it attach by throwing over top of a high top as it's only designed for lower awning rail?
Thanks

Hi Alf..

The chap we know who uses a Kyham Motordome, has a VW bay camper,so he has a gutter rail to fix it to...I doubt your vehicle would have a "gutter", would it?

But as the attaching "apron" isn't really under much tension, I would've thought that you could use a combination of straps and maybe *suction pads?( or even magnets?)to do the job....

*These are "no longer available" now(and a ridiculous price anyway!  ) but the type of thing I meant:

http://www.justkampers.com/awning-suction-clamps-mounting-brackets-pack-of-3-no-drilling-req.html

(We had a Movelite Drive away "Square", when they first came out(sold unused)..and that was a bit of a faff to put up to be honest..the "sleeves" on ours were too tight to allow the pole-"shoulders" to pass through easily...)

I find there is always a way to make things work if you look hard enough and ask enough questions.
Thanks

Hi again Alf...

Although you'd clearly stated it, I've only just twigged that you've got a Hi-top(so presumably fibreglass?), for some reason I was picturing a pop-top! .. so please dismiss my, silly, "magnet" suggestion..

Our first van was a Hi-top Transit(Duetto) and although that did have a gutter rail, hooking to that gave various degrees of success(...it would sometimes "flap off").

I did try a few "dry runs" using the throw-over straps but ours had a lot of roof "furniture"(3 skylights/vents,an aerial etc) and they kept getting tangled..so I gave up.

..and although that was several vans ago, if we had kept it, we would have bitten the bullet and looked into fitting a proper, neat "C" profiled, awning rail.

(*I should point out that at the time, we were using an Easicanopy "tarp" and/or a small caravan "porch" awning, so unlike free-standing drive-aways, both of these did require a strong "mounting point" to tension from).

So...if I was you, for now I would perhaps have umpteen "play-abouts" with the existing awning(on the drive'?) just to see how the "apron" sits and how much bigger it needs to be to sit right on your roof(..and to check that the straps aren't likely to get tangled)..

I'm guessing here but judging by how I remember some of the "XL" sized drive-aways that I've seen against large MHs, they may swamp a relatively small campervan ..?

(..and not forgetting, the bigger it is, the bigger the b*ll ache it is to put up/take down..and dry out, when you get home!  )

For a greater chance of first hand feedback from Granvia owners, it may be worth just contacting the forum Mods, to see if they can/will change your thread title to include "Granvia" and "Hi-top" ?

Edit:

An idea I did toy with at the time, was using several suction cups, attached to an awning/"J" rail..Something like these:

Hi
Thanks. Suction cups may be an idea I have also seen people use dent pullers (think thats what there called) so plenty of options to try after weekend trials.

Hi sdc77

The xlf is deffo one of awnings we are thinking of and would have been interested in buying yours, after we have tried out the smaller outdoor revolution one this weekend.
We are too far away to collect though? and i would imagine postal costs would make it not cost effective to ship and a lot of hassel for you to pack.
Thanks for the offer though.
Alf.
