Hi, after many years of camping and numerous tents we recently decided to enter the campervan world. We've acquired a Talbot Express Pilote Campervan year 1992 and are looking for Recovery and Breakdown cover. Please could anyone advise or recommend on this, given the age of the vehicle. Thank you.

I've got a 1994 Talbot and I'm with the AA. I called them out last year. They didn't even query the age.

Is this for the UK or for Europe as well?

As Whatamess says you should be ok in the UK but many European policies only cover vehicles up to 10 or 11 years old under their normal policies, but you can usually still get cover if you pay a supplement.

Saga do motorhome breakdown cover if you are over 50. No age limit on vehicle when I was with them even abroad.

Safeguard are currently doing 12 months for the price of 10 on insurance which includes a really good breakdown package for UK and abroad. I'm about to insure with them for my VW T4 conversion - however you should phone them to check out the age of your vehicle. So, if you don't have insurance sorted, check them out : 0800 466 1919

I have just joined the AA via Quidco.....

Personal cover for wife and I which covers any vehicle, including motorcycles and trailers/caravans.......for roadside repairs and recovery to either home or onward destination...for £119.98. Then we get £42-60 as a cash back reward via Quidco. So it's a bargain.

The RAC wouldn't cover the caravan for recovery if for example it had a puncture or brake failure...only covered car/ towing vehicle but would recover van if car not able to be repaired.

Caravan club/green flag don't cover cars over 16 years of age. We have an old 4x4 with very low mileage which is garaged unless we are using it to tow the van....so no go with caravan club....those with older cars/ motor homes check to see if you are covered.

We have a 1991 Fiat Ducatto Landliner (is mine the oldest on the forum ?!) & been insured with the NFU for over a year - our car insurance was already with them & they gave us a better price than the AA did at that time.

Just for use in the UK at the moment but I seem to recall their saying they would insure for use abroad when we wanted it (we did intend to go to Spain France or Germany this year) they were easy to insure with, very efficient & helpful.

When we first got our T4 we joined the Camping and Caravan Club and almost default used their insurance for the van and it includes roadside help and recovery. We had a few problems with flat batteries during our first year and they always came quickly and got us running, they also recovered us to our local garage after a burnt out starter motor. Last year we had a problem with the side door at a site in Norfolk and the repair van was authorised to get the part and make a return visit to fit it.
We've been very happy with this insurance but I think that you do have to be members of the club [the discounted camping fees easily cover the annual subscription though] and they've been very competitive on price [£249./00 last year] and this covers up to 90 days in Europe which can be extended if required.

I have been shopping around for breakdown cover. When I looked at the policy wording and restrictions on line many of the providers, including the AA, will not cover a motorhome more that 7 metres long, 2.3 wide and 3 high. Mine is 0.1 larger on two counts and whilst I am sure that no-one will get the tape measure out I am aware that service could be refused. This is a minefield and my motorhome is not a large one!! Costs also vary enormously so I advise you to do your homework carefully and read the small print. An AA advisor in one of their kiosks was convinced that there would be no problem - after all you can cancel when you get the documents and of course pay the cancelation fee - but when I phoned their offices I was told in no uncertain ways that they would not cover the vehicle!!

Good luck - I am continuing to keep looking.

I thought Saga was expensive. I am with the RAC through C&CC, which covers us for Europe and all our other cars.
