Perhaps it's just a means of preparing you for French aires? I think there is a psychological element to it as well - safety in numbers, circling the wagons, that kind of thing. I know it's illogical, but if overnighting in a public area, like a car park or at the roadside, I feel more secure if I'm not the only van there. And so I am quite likely to slot in next to another van - if you 'vant to be alone' a la Dietrich, perhaps you should be on a campsite pitch?
