Seems strange to me that The National Trailers and Towing Association is claiming one thing yet there are plenty of firms making and selling A-frames and at any Classic Car Rally that we have attended, there are any number of Classic Cars arriving having been a-framed there.
We ourselves a-framed our Morris's for years to rallies and no one batted an eye.
Indeed we once towed a Morris behind a Ford Fiesta from South Wales to Glasgow and cleared the tow with the Police before undertaking it.
I have a universal A-frame in my workshop and would not hesitate to use it if I required to tow any of my Morris's.
i used to tow a smart on a A-frame last year, while it was great to get out and about, it was a third vehicle in our household so i looked at the cost of keeping the three, i sold the smart and a-frame seperatly and now if using a club site i hire a small car
Thread bumped as this & this might be of interest. If you google translate from French it appears A frame towing is legal in France at least & probably in the rest of Europe.

Not in Spain as the Guarda Civil Traffico do not condone them and are not interested in any so called documentation provided by UK a frame manufacturers
Re the legality of A Frames etc, you have to realise that we, here in the UK have a totally different system of law to that of your Continental cousins.
In the UK law is described in statutes and contained within it, the law states what is illegal. Every other form of conduct is therefore legal.
On the Continent, well in Spain, the law states what is legal. It follows that anything other than that enshrined in their Law is unlawful.
Take the case of A Frames. There is nothing in UK law that states that their use is illegal. Follow the statutes with regard to braking efficiency and it would be difficult to find an offence.
Go to Spain and there they say,"You cannot tow a car behind a vehicle and leave some (or all) of it's wheels on the ground unless that vehicle has broken down".(paraphrasing)
That's why the Spanish Police stop 'vans towing a car behind on an A Frame
