We are looking to buy our first camper van later this year (around October time) and are confused by the wide choice. Our main concern is that it should have a double bed, ability to carry two passengers in the back. Our budget is about £28000. In two years time this may well be our only vehicle so a motorhome is not being considered.
Any recommendations and what should we avoid

We are very happy with our   Murvi Morello.

Large, easily made double bed due to the click-clack mechanism - no messy fiddling with infill cushions and it can seat up to 7 (2 in the front, 5 in the back) when the back settee is turned to face the front.

Ours is our only vehicle and at 5.6m long it's not car like but easy to drive and park.

The drawback is that they do hold their value so are not cheap secondhand and they are like hens teeth to find, but if you get a chance go to see one.

Along  similar lines to above, check out Adria Twins..

Your budget would easily get you a very tidy, well looked after, previous model Fiat Ducato, with plenty left over  for fuel/pitch fees/ferries etc..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Adria-twin-fixed-bed-camper-REDUCED-/271542969492?pt=UK_Campers_Caravans_Motorhomes&hash=item3f3938e494

..in fact, you could probably find an early X250 Ducato for the budget you state above.

Again, not exactly  "car like", and if you'll need to be using it to commute to work everyday etc, then maybe something "VW-sized"(..with an awning), would be a better option?...

but if it won't be for "commuting" then they're certainly usable as an "only vehicle"...

We have a VW Trooper which carries 4 with seat belts for 4. It is 18 years old and has travelled through France North to South for 5 years without a problem. She (Alfie) is brilliant. It's a rock and roll bed so we can leave it made up and just roll it back at night so no storage problems. She has a pop up roof and from when we arrive at the camp site it is 6 minutes till we enjoy a cup of tea, this year we carried 84 bottles of wine, a 3 foot peach tree and 2 beach chairs from a flea market for our son in Brighton back home with us . Our clothes are in ex co-op plastic baskets (tee shirts and shorts ) and a dress and jeans hang in the wardrobe. We don't carry water and use the sink to store tins of food / cereal in. We carry an electric hob which covers cooking rice and a tin of curry in a two in one saucepan and lots of fresh fruit and salads from the markets. It is our second car and goes under the car park height restrictions. We love her !

We too have a VW, and love it. Sounds the same spec as the trooper above, though ours is much newer. For that budget you should have plenty of choice. We chose the pop top to go in car parks, this is our second car, but goes out regularly.
