Hi, a bit early I know but looking to hire a MH next year to follow the Tour De France. Did it last year camping but want to be able to travel easier. Eventually we want to buy a MH so this will determine if we like it! Have had a look on Motorhome Direct and prices come in around £1500-2000 for 2 weeks hire in July, does this seem reasonable? Does anyone have any recommendations of where else to look to hire from? We currently camp (or rather glamp!) with EHU so completely new to MH's so any advice would be appreciated

2 adults (no children but 2 bikes which we would need to keep in the MH and not fixed on the back - I would be on the back before the bikes!) and think prefer a fixed bed or overhead bed. Daft question but if we parked up at the side of the road can we use electrics/shower or do we need to be attached to EHU on a site? Planning on sites as well as roadside depending on the route release in October. Thanks in advance!

Motorhomes are usually self contained so you don't need EHU. However the charge in the leisure battery won't last for ever so you will either need a motorhome with solar panels or be able to stop at an Aire or Campsite at regular intervals to recharge the battery. If you are only using the battery for water pump and lights it may well last longer. You will also need a good supply of gas. Water can be taken onboard and grey water dumped at the many Camping Car Aires in France and of course you can stay on them as well.

Opinions may vary but to me 'motorhome' implies something with a coachbuilt body, i.e. with bodywork which is bigger than that provided by the manufacturer of the base vehicle and therefore not what most people call a campervan, or van conversion which externally looks pretty much like a van with windows.

I start with clarification on this point because it is very relevant to getting bikes inside.

A motorhome will generally be bigger than a van conversion in terms of the space it takes up on the planet but it will almost certainly have a smaller door. I think you will struggle badly to get bikes inside a motorhome unless they are Stridas or otherwise fold really small or the motorhome is of the really large variety with built-in 'garage'.

I, on the other hand, have a campervan (Murvi on a Ducato) into which I could confidently insert at least three full size bikes despite the vehicle being smaller but because it gives the choice of a wide sliding side door or a top hinged rear door (through which I have inserted a touring motor bike with room to spare so I do know about how much space there is).

Chasing round a foreign country at a hire cost well north of four figures seems a bold experiment, have you not looked into off-peak weekend or midweek hire rates to see whether you can less expensively find out whether a motorhome suits your tastes and needs?

I don't think you should worry about electricity - following the tour you'll drive every 2-3 days I expect so the battery will get plenty of charging. Ask the hire company which of the vehicle's facilities operate off battery and which require mains hook-up, they can vary but if they say the microwave and 32inch telly work off battery do expect it to need charging considerably more!

Motorhomes devalue that slowly that it would be cheaper to buy and sell one than to hire one. The battery should be fine and will charge up as you drive between sites.

Thanks for your replies. The motorhomes that we plan to buy in the future typically won't be the cheapest (typical woman - wants the best!) As it will be our main holiday next year factoring in what it will cost it would still work out cheaper than 2 weeks lying in the sun, and we'll be doing something we enjoy more! We're not quite old enough yet to buy a MH but we're getting there!

Motor homes are brilliant for a holiday like you describe. You are free to travel and have the versatility to run off hook ups a battery and or gas. Some MH also have solar panels. Funnily enough we have a fixed island bed MH that does all of these with a large garage that would be available for hire next year ! Happy to send photos 😀😀😀😀
