After one puncture and a scary blowout I'm looking at repositioning the spare wheel from underneath the body.
There's several threads on this but not one on the idea I have in mind.
Mount it on the rear ladder. Will it work?
If it will take the weight of an adult, surely 35kg isn't too much to ask for?
Making a suitable clamp/bracket will be needed.
Any thoughts?
In theory it seems a sensible way of carrying the spare but I've never seen it actually fitted to the ladder.
The ladder bracket will take the weight of a person but that's mainly a downward force on the brackets and not really for any long term weight.
I don't know how competent you are mechanically but seeing a local Motorhome/Caravan engineer might be a better option and having the spare fitted directly to the rear bodywork, that's usually the answer, could be more sensible in the long term.
We had a blow-out on a dual carriageway - scary, I agree. Our problem was that the fixing holding up the spare tyre bracket underneath was rusted solid. AA came and used a hacksaw to release the tyre. We'd only just got the MH, hadn't thought about regularly greasing the screw /bolt. I'd say that maintaining the fixing is as important as keeping the tyre clean. OH doesn't take overalls - if it's that sort of problem, the AA has dealt with it so far.
The point I was trying to make, admittedly not very well, was that the spare wheel attached to the ladder will pull up, down and everywhere when you go over bad road surfaces, pot holes and rough ground.
The ladder brackets were not designed for anything weighing around 25 kilo attached to them constantly vibrating about and may not in the long term be up to the job.
I did get you Keith, anyway, that fanciful idea has been binned as if fitted to the ladder, it will protrude well beyond the MH body.
Two options remain. Put it back under, or on the roof rack.
It's great where it is now, behind the passenger seat, but my wife has decided I must take her on holiday, and not a bit of spare!.....
