We usually drain our tank at the end of the season (including the hot water tank's separate drain after making sure the heater's turned off). We do this at the last campsite we're at as we don't like flooding the gravel outside the house. It doesn't take long to refill if the weather stays mild enough for another trip. But the one year we didn't, there was a very very cold spell (minus 10 deg, the river froze over) and our water heater bust (using a non-technical term), a pricey replacement. Plus, though we don't drink the tank water from the tap (we top up non-spill bottles from a tap on site) it's nice to have fresher water for the coffee & cooking than water that's been lying in the tank for goodness knows how long, especially as I've no idea what are old tank is made of.
