Advice please -travelling to the French alps in February and we know we need winter tyres on our Motorhome (CI Cusona 700 - pretty big wheelbase). Firstly what is the difference between winter tyres and snow tyres? would we want snow chains for the front 2 tyres as well? Can anyone recommend a good make? Just seen the news today re total chaos in the Alps in France and just want to be as prepared as possible.

Winter tires aren't mandatory in France but are recommended if travelling in the Alpine region.
Proper winter tires should carry the snowflake inside a mountain mark on the sidewalls.
The fitting of snow chains when indicated is mandatory if you wish to continue on the snow covered roads.
The chaos at the moment is made worse by the sheer volume of traffic going to and from the ski resorts

Thanks Saxo1, we plan to ski in Austria too at some point so will be getting winter tyres but confused about needing snow chains as well - would all 6 tyres require snow chains? (we thought winter tyres would mean not needing chains)not going til Feb half term but obv need to be fully prepared - 1st time skiing in our motorhome.

It is permissible to fit chains just to the driven wheels but is better if the are fitted to all wheels,if your vehicle is front wheel drive if they are fitted to the front it may oversteer.
In Austria, as in France, if indicated, fitting chains is mandatory if you wish to continue.
