Hello

       Could someone tell me what size of battery I need for a fiat duocat 2.8 swift kon tiki 615 on a 04 plate ? Also will it need to be the same size as the leisure battery ?

The leisure battery(s) is totally separate to the van battery as determined by the splitter. If you have two or more leisure batteries they need to be wired in parallel to increase the AHC. It is these that need to be the same grade/type otherwise one will potentially leach off the other.

For your engine battery you need a 95 or 100amp/hr, standard posts, dimensions 354mm length, 175mm width, 190mm height.

The leisure battery will bear no relation to this though. Leisure batteries are pretty standard in size but probably 110 amp/hr is what you want. You will need to measure size of existing leisure battery though. If there only room for smaller 90amp battery then you will have to go with that.

Hi

Just a thought('though possibly a bit late),is there nowhere local(ish) that you could obtain one?(motor factors?).Even if it's 10-20 quid dearer, if it's from somewhere local,you can strike up a "rapport", hopefully get some decent advice and also be able to take it back, if a fault develops...?

While you are about batteries is if possible to slave start your motorhome off your own leisure battery.

It is provided it is big enough but not very good for battery as normal caravan leisure battery is not designed for fast discharge so not something you should make a habit of.

If your engine battery is any good it should stay ok if you are parked onsite for 2-3wks & a better idea would be to take separate charger to charge battery off EHU overnight before you leave if it has gone flat.

Talking desirability rather than is it wired to do so:

Only wise to do so if you know that the leisure battery is not quite what it should be!

If it is a relabelled starter battery or close to one in its build technology, then fine it is a starter battery.
If it is a quality leisure battery featuring the correct technology for "deep cycling" then it will not develop the currents required and the "better" it is built the more damage attempting starting will do to it.
There is a lot of ground between the extremes and those batteries primarily aimed at the hobby end of the marine market are built to do a "reasonable" job of both tasks,[at the expense of not excelling at the harder deep cycling ability.]
If it is a GEL I would not try it even in an emergency; if it is a budget [sub £100 odd per 100AH] then in an emergency I would, though not like doing it as a routine.

Thank you for that but I do not think ill do it.

I have solar panels that charge my two leisure batteries and now just reading about a devise that will charge the engine battery from the solar panels.

The Morningstar Duo solar controller I use to service my two batteries does just that. It can be set to give either 50 or 90 % to battery one the balance to battery two. If either battery is "full" then it is smart enough to divert all the panels yield to the battery requiring the charge. I have it with the optional meter. I purchased mine in the States where prices were a lot cheaper than I could find in the UK.

It can also be set with differing technology batteries in each location, so a starter on two say and a deep cycling AGM or GEL on one.

The EPIPDB-COM controller is similar to the Morningstar (though a bit more versatile as you can set the proportions in more ways than just 50:50 and 90:10) and seems a lot cheaper - e.g. the 10 amp version at £26 here:

I however can personally vouch for the performance and reliability of the Morningstar Duo, and their single channel SS unit, though I am well aware of many cheaper units can be obtained off internet auction, and the like sites.

True, but the EPIPDB-COM is built into all Sargent EC325 and EC328 power control systems, so Sargent must reckon that it has something to recommend it!
