i am having difficulty with the dvla regarding the renewal of the C1 part of my driving licence. has anyone had cause to use, or knows anything that would be helpful in using 'grandfathers rights'
any advice would be appreciated.

Hi go to the d v l a site it explains everything and you can have the forms sent to you i,m in the process of doing mine and am off to the doctors next month to have the medical papers filled in £85 then to the opticians for a sight test which is free. you can apply 3/4 months in advance, its all on their site. I hope this helps.NONI
Perhaps a few more details would be useful. Is it a case of having the entitlement and then allowing it to drop? If that is the case you will have to rely on the DVLA keeping a record of your past entitlement. Perhaps too late in the day to suggest this but I always suggest that people keep copies of their license before sending off the DVLA so you always have proof.
Lots of people have had licences return with entitlements missing,i sent an A4 copy of mine and asked them to make sure they stayed on my licence.
If they have come back missing the dvla sometimes ask for proof of passing these tests which you cannot do as they were automatically added when you passed your test before 1997.
You should receive a reminder to renew driving licence at 70. If you wish to continue your C1 entitlement to allow you to drive motorhome 3.5t to 7.5t you will have to have a medical. You GP can do this but not on NHS so can cost up to £100 & lasts 3yrs. If you renew licence at 70 without medical then C1 entitlement will lapse.
'Grandfather's rights' in this context refer to licence catergories that previously did not require a test & now do. The term was coined in the late 60s when HGV tests were introduced & one had to prove 'grandfather's rights', ie that you had been driving HGVs before the test introduction to be exempted from test.
The op appears to be referring to loss of C1 entitlement from their licence recently & has yet to respond to the possible reasons suggested. It does seem odd that owners of motorhomes over 3.5tMAM require medical to retain C1 entitlement over age 70 but B+E entitlement to drive car/caravan outfit combined over 3.5tMAM does not.

Grandfather rights are those that past there Driving Test before January 1st 1997 which still have the old green paper licence
Doesnt everyone still have two bits - photocard and green paper? Or is this something else that has bypassed me?
I have a D+E licence, which is due for renewal in March. I will have to have a medical to renew it, and an annual one from now on as I am over 65. Will I get a new paper licence?

You will get a Photocard licence and possibly a paper counterpart.
The paper counterpart will not be required after the 8th of June and can be discarded.

If you are coming up to 70 yrs old you will get a reminder to renew your licence
If you past your test before 1997 and want to carry on driving 3.5ton to 7.5 you will need a medical at your doctors which will cost you, and a eye test.If you do not wish to drive 3.5 you can just renew your licence to drive under 3.5ton. I believe you then get photocard licence
Thanks Folks. I have a photocard licence with paper counterpart, but wasn't sure whether I would get a new paper bit. I have a few years to go yet before I get to 70, and would have to replace my CPC if I wanted to continue to be able to drive buses when I reach 70, but I'm not sure whether I will want to. I am actually retired, and only help out occasionally anyway. Mainly driving buses from the 1950s and 60s.
