We are considering changing our Compass Rambler motorhome for a Bailey Escape 620 but the driver is concerned about the Escape being 8 inches wider than the Compass,does anyone have experience of driving a motorhome of driving vans of 2.69m width as encountering any problems, narrow country lanes are obviously a separate issue!

I think it might be a Bailey Approach not an Escape which is a model designation used by Swift?

I have a Bailey Approach 740 which is the same width. It is my first motorhome so I have nothing to compare it with in terms of driving. If a road can take a bus or a lorry you won't have any problems. Some roads, even main ones, are narrower than others so you have to drive to the conditions. What the extra width gives you is much more room inside.

As I mentioned the 740 is our first motorhome so nothing to judge against. Initially I was a bit concerned because a lot of the reviews kept going on about the width as its one of the widest motorhomes in that sector on the market. I was surprised how easy it was to drive and I suppose yours being quite a bit shorter should be even easier. We have had the odd occasion when we have had to pull over right close to the side of the road and sometimes vegetation rubs along the side of the van but the fibre glass sides are pretty robust. Further to my previous question, my husband is concerned that the lower chassis f this motorhome will cause grounding of the spare wheel (thank you Out and About Live!). Has anyone found this an issue? I think it would only be an issue where going from flat ground to a steep incline but cannot completely reassure him!

Never had any issues with anything grounding. The spare wheel is well off the ground. The only issues I have read about is where people have been boarding small ferries and depending on the angle between the land and the ferry. Given that yours is one of the shorter models I would have thought you were very unlikely to suffer grounding.

By looking at the sideways view of van ... And from experience I also think it is very unlikely that such a short van will touch ground! I also read that Bailey had in fact lengthened the wheelbase after testing the protype.

Hope this helps - but I also worry about things that will never happen!
