Now you mention it, a neighbour's boat has been parked/moored on his drive for over 10 years now without them even having a game of scrabble in it.

But they have just started painting it's bottom. We are 80 feet above sea level here - is there something about global warming effects that the sailors have not told us motor-homers about?

(Love these posts where one can go off-topic without the pedantic police complaining!☺)

And finally - Julia - your post has prompted the greatest number of replies of any on this forum since 7 Dec 2014!

I'm sorry as I did not mean to divert this post but boat ownership can be a puzzle

I would love to own a boat having been involved with "boats" since I could hardly walk but how much use would it get?

Sometimes I even get the same feelings about our Motorhome. It represents a large sum of money and for what it cost, Mrs B. and i could have a good holiday every year. As it is, we only take it away to France twice a year and down to Devon about the same amount of times.

We used to have the best of both worlds.
A boat moored on Ullswater, which had its own caravan site.
Finish work on the Friday, hook up the van, be at the site by 8pm and boating all weekend. Great stuff.
Poor health knocked both the van and boat on the head.

Happybonzo:
Yep,you are right. Over last 10 years guess we have prob spent at least £4K per annum 'motorhoming'.(inc. depreciation) That would prob pay for 2 or 3 good holidays per year - but rather than a somewhat splendid 6 weeks away we do at least use the MH all year and love it and the life to bits as well as just enjoying seeing our expensive toy on the drive! And sharing stuff on good forums like this one is surely much more fun than whinging about expensive hotels on tripadviser etc!

Motley:
So sorry to hear about health issues etc - we are both starting to creak now the wrong side of 70 so pills allowing we intend to make the most of things by further adding to the existing wonderful memories. (My first love is still lightweight back-packing btw.)

Well l drove by the lonely sad little motorhome today, and can confirm that it hasnt budged an inch since it arrived. Its a little Autosleeper Nuevo, and l know its daft, but l cannot help but feel sorry for it and the sad life thats instore without any adventures and life on the open road, as the top prize winner of the towns most expensive garden ornament competition!

But equally you need to feel gladness in your heart for the owners of this motorhome. Imagine how hollow & empty they would feel if their lives were not able to be enhanced by the simple joy of the aquisition & ownership of this vehicle?

Do not feel pity for this non living product of a factory production line, feel the joy that the owners feel & feel the joy of the new owner years hence when they discover what all secondhand buyers seek, the imaculate gem after weeks of viewing nothing but clapped out wrecks.

I love this thread, great fun to follow. Here is another explanation.Perhaps like myself these boat & MH owners pour over their maps & bank account ,plan wonderful trips to enjoy their retirement (after years of slog in public sector) only to be thwarted at the last minute by the "ancients mafia" who have had yet another stroke, broken hip, heart attack ,hissing fit etc etc and need looking after. My little Nuevo and I made it to Stranraer (from Surrey) parked up ,got another phone call & yes drove the ten hours back again. Oh to be an orphan, married to an orphan..... only kidding! Loire trip planned for June..fingers crossed

Or just maybe they bought it so they can go on exotic holidays abroad knowing that the house won't get burgled because the van is on the drive...And the nosey neighbours will always be looking at it....
As they say, ...when its away , your away....

When I bought this house, the next-door neighbours had two motor-homes. One was blue, Transit sized and parked on the drive and the and the other was an orange Transit parked on the road.

The blue one hadn't moved for so long it had a healthy crop of bindweed all around the wheels. The orange one never moved for over 2 years, but the owner went out every few months, did lots of tinkering under the bonnet and started it up.

One year (1995, I think), they actually went away in it for a week. Nine months later, Mrs Next-Door had a third child, so that one was known as the Fertility Symbol.

About 1997, we went away for a week, came back and the blue one had gone, its place in the drive taken by the orange Transit. The Transit never moved again, became a bindweed host like the blue one and eventually went away on the back of a lorry.

The Next-Doors also have a rather pretty yellow 1974 MGB in their garage that hasn't been out of the garage since I moved in in February 1993.

Some people in their advanced years become a little paranoid about the tax man taking their hard earned savings when they "go" (If you have over a certain amount in the bank you can`t have this or that and we`ll take our cut when you die to rub salt in as well). I`m not saying this is the case but you never know.
