Could anyone please tell me if they have succeeded in getting UK insurance on a motorhome that is garaged abroad? We're moving back to UK, but want to leave the vehicle in France for holidays. I'm not having much luck finding an insurer who wants to cope.
Thanks Stuart. We do have local banking etc - but won't have a local permanent address, though we can use friends' address. Keeping French insurers is plan A - going to check with the insurer tomorrow - just wanted thoughts on plan B.
Suspect may be difficult if using a 'standard' MH insurance.
E.g. Comfort Insurance: Unless at home address/where van is normally parked you are not covered anywhere else if away from van more than 36 hours! Mind you - they are very good value if you are 'normal/standard/average' !
------------- The older I get the better I used to be.
Thanks iggycamper. Perhaps that's why they didn't want to know. Pinning hopes on the French insurers, but otherwise importation and all the hassle seems daunting! Might be easier to sell and then buy in the UK.
If its French reg stay with French insurance & use friend's address, you cannot insure foreign reg with UK insurer. If its UK reg then it needs UK insurance & once its 3yrs old will need to return to UK once a yr for MoT.
In theory a UK reg vehicle should not be kept abroad permanently on UK insurance but Saga European cover is all yr so technically you can store abroad provided it returns for MoT. Most UK insurers put a time limit for Europeean trips, 90days or less.
