Hi All

I have just bought a 1991 Renault Holdsworth Rainbow. Its very clean with only a small amount of rust on the arches, very good for the year. But to my dismay I have discovered that it only has a two way fridge, gas and 12v. I never even thought to check this as I thought all camper fridges were three way! Is it possible to retro fit a 3 way fridge if I could find one that is similar size?

Any advice gratefully recieved

Teresa

Hi...Don't fret,,,

As long as it it works okay, then personally I don't think I'd bother with looking into swapping it(not until it breaks, anyway),as they, fridges, use next to nowt on gas anyway...

When we had our first van,an  A/S Duetto, when using it off hook-up I had visions of the fridge eating the gas...but we found that for our "campervan-camping" style of usage, a 6kg bottle would easily last us a full year's use..

If you've not already done so, as it's a quarter of a century old, I would certainly recommended getting a decent service/check for any onboard appliances, though

(..and the fitter/engineer may give you some feedback as to whether swapping the fridge is worthwhile?...)

Running fridge off gas will use around 2.5kg of gas in 7days of continuous running. Cheaper than Ehu but more expensive if you need Ehu anyway. So yes you can have a 3way fitted, you will probably find a Dometic of same dimensions. Unusual to find 2way in van that age, I've only seen them in 70s vans.

Thanks for the replies..
My main concern with running of gas is actually having a gas appliance running when Im in the van! Ive always avoided it in past with caravans/campers I've had as it makes me a bit nervous. So I think if I don't change it I will definitely need a gas check. Im not sure what would be involved re. connecting a three way fridge but I guess it shouldn't be too difficult for the right person. It does seem odd that a 91 van should only have a 2 way but I have seem other examples of this model with the same set up so it obviously came that way from new

It would be a good idea to clean out fridge burner & flue, you might access that by removing bottom exterior fridge vent otherwise fridge will have to come out. Provided burner & flue is clean its safe. Danger is lighting fridge that has not been used on gas for yrs & debris in flue catches fire.

If van is fitted with mains hookup it won't be difficult to connect up a new fridge, usual way is 230v socket installed in cupboard with fridge cable fitted with normal 3pin plug.

I dont think the fridge has been used for a while so a clean would be a good idea. But I think I may try and source a 3 way fridge as it seems fairly straightforward to fit if you can put a standard plug on it.

Thanks!

How about fitting a 12v transformer to run it off mains? Just an idea.

Mmm, that's an idea. think I need to speak to someone who knows more about this kind of thing to see what the best option will be.

Thanks
