Looking to dip our toes again in to the motorhome game, been looking round Fleabay/Gumtree and with some panel vans I get the impression someone has bought a van converted and selling it on for a profit. This is never stated in the advert, just an impression, suspicion I get. I have no problem with this one should be rewarded for ones honest toil, I just wish they would just say so.
And a lot of vans seem to have a standard grey sometimes blue finish to the interior walls. Is this some kind of spray on system, or just carpet glued to the wall.
Any thoughts comments.
Got a £15000 budget looking for a 2 berth, if you know a cracking deal.....
Although this may be a bit harsh on the genuine sellers/small convertors but I'd be very careful if looking at a freshly converted, "unbranded" van...I'd want to be able to check up on the company who did the work...
As furniture kits etc are available online, there's nowt to stop anyone knocking something together. Which may be fine, if it's for their own use but the sell on?..and when it can/does involve gas appliances, electrical systems etc then I'd be very careful...(..and you do get to read of some horror stories)..
For £15,000 you could get an older "main manufacturer" campervan/PVC or you could look at sourcing your own van and get it converted properly, and how you want it?(rather than buy something stinking of old cigarette smoke and damp dog or someone's DIY lash-up )

I think you would have to be careful with a converted panel van apart from the 'cowboy' element there could be a problem with the Insurance!
hi tom, we have a custom built van we are thinking of selling, it started it's life as a panel van & for the last 7/8 years,it is a fixed bed campervan converted by a firm called WILDAX.
you can get a good camper from some of the lesser known makers, there is a lot to choose from.
I have had VW T4 partly converted by Reimo to suit our needs, Auto-sleeper high top, Compass Coach built.
but the one we have had the longest is the Wildax as we had it built to our design, we have had 8 years of holiday's in it, but now with all the aches & pains we have we are thinking of giving up.
if you decide to get a van converted, make sure you by your own van.
good luck.

VW panel vans have been converted to campers for 60 odd years now.
No issue with panel conversions. If you need a back seat that converts to a bed, the seat belt fittings can still be safely fitted.
All very easy and safe.
DVLA recognise that too and only ask for pictures if you wish to register a change of vehicle category, I.e panel van to camper.
The only difference in category is that as a camper, you can legally drive faster on the roads rather than be classified as a commercial vehicle.
My bus is a T25 panel, and I keep it that way because I love the look. But the roof is a Devon poptop and the interior is all original Devon conversion, with rock and roll bed.

Camping, The feeling is in tents!!!
I've got superb Ford Transit 3 seater, 2006, and all I've done is fit a double bed in, (removable) and will use a driveaway awning as the living quarters.
Looking forward to our first european trip to holland in July.

At what stage does the insurance change?
Does throwing a mattress into the back and touring around class it as a camper?
Aslan
in a word "No"
The DVLA (are they still called that?) have a list of what they consider to be advised items that will enable the change of vehicle from PLG (?) to Motor Caravan
See the SBMCC for further details

It's a material called Lining Carpet. You use something like Evilstick(in large quantities; the spray cans seem to be the best in my experience)
