Hi - we've been looking for a while now at car options and keep changing our minds. I've just been looking at Nissan Elgrands for sale in the UK - They seem reasonably priced and you can get low mileage versions in decent condition.

Do any of you guys own one or have driven one? Compared to something like a VW transporter they seem like an incredibly good deal. I love the look of the earlier models as well.

3 kids plus a wolf lake 7 + all the other camping equipment means we need something bigger... looking at something like a ford Galaxy - even that will struggle to accommodate our stuff... but the Elgrand does look big enough for our requirements.

Would be interested to know running costs, insurance costs, reliability and what they're like to own/drive.

I believe they suffer the same problem as all the other Japanese imports of this type in that the have a terrible thirst for fuel especially in town as they are mostly automatics and have quite large engines plus many are 4x4 ...you could try joining the Elgrand forum on here

I owned a 97 Elgrand, E32 3.2 TD for just short of four years and I can honestly say it' the best vehicle I've ever owned bar none.
It's an excellent cruiser, very comfortable and a pleasure to drive. Compared to some larger vehicles I'm more than happy with the fuel economy, It goes cheaper still when adding SVO into the mix. My previous car was a Toyota hi-Lux, 2.4 Td. The Elgrand has half as much again better fuel economy.
It's practically sailed through the last 3 MOT's.
Six of us went away in it last year, me, the good lady, son, girlfriend and two grandkids, 4 dogs plus all the gear, we bought a fairly large roo box for this trip mind, it was tight but we managed it. The year before just us, the Grandkids and two dogs,there was plenty of room.
It's a very practical 8 seater, the rear seats lift up out of the way, all the sesats fold down but a not too uncomfy double bed.
Stick to the 2 wheel drive I'd say. less to go wrong and better fuel economy.
Insurance was £280 fully comp.
They're a great vehicle, go for it.

Hi,

We've had a 2003 Nissan Elgrand for nearly a year now...love it! We started out looking for a VW transporter..HOW MUCH! Forget it, Saw an Elgrand and bought one within a week.

As Kenny said it is amazingly comfortable..you just waft along lol, but when you need some power god can it shift!

Quite simply the best vehicle we've ever owned.

When we got it we justified the fuel consumption by saying  'It's not like we'll use it every day', We do, my Audi has been relegated to just being used to leave at the station now!

Fuel around town about 18 mpg, on a run at sensible speeds mid to high 20's

Tax £230 a year

Insurance around £250 a year

Go for a drive in one...you'll be hooked

And that sums up nicely the problem with japanese import based campervans, which is a pity because they are great value and lovely to drive ....

...yes but in fairness, if people were honest with themselves as to what mpg their vehicles really returned (instead of cherry picking a few favourable figures from their, usually lying, trip computers  ), then those figures aren't that wide of the mark.(especially if we're comparing comparable engine sizes/fuel types/4x4 etc).

It's not unusual to read posts on forums, with folk claiming that their 1980's Talbot Autohomes-Elddis-Wayfarer Roadwarrior overcabbed coachbuilt returns 35+mpg ...?!    Utter rolloxs!    

(..there're many family cars/mpvs  about that don't consistently manage that..)

Don't get me wrong, I have a soft spot for Japanese vans having owned 2, they come with every trick in the book and are lovely to drive, are an ideal size to run around town in and much cheaper than an equivalent VW to purchase but the mpg is dreadful, my hiace based van was much worse on fuel than my present Citroen based van and the Citroen is at least 3 times the size..If your thinking of running one of these as every day transport then you really need to take in to consideration fuel costs especially as its on the way up again

18 mpg - eek!

I must admit I would love one of these, or even better a Toyota Alphard but being a duffer mechanically speaking don't they cost a lot to get a garage to fix/service?

Researching the costs and parts availability for any "grey import" would be wise...but as they're not uncommon nowadays, perhaps one can assume that  there are specialist companies dealing with them?(..and that many parts may be generic?).

Also, as most Jap-imports seem to be around 3ltr (some petrol and some even 4x4!) then, if to be used as a daily-driver then mpg would of cause need to be taken into consideration.

Different vehicles I know but our 2001 Toyota Hiace van(UK model), with 207,000 miles on the clock, sails through the MOT and being relatively "crude" and from a different era, costs peanuts in garage costs..

With our previous '07 X250 Peugeot and '08 Renault Master MHs, yes, they may've returned slightly better mpg but it wasn't unusual  to receive 500-700 quid garage bills...

I know the Alphard comes with a 2.4L engine so maybe mpg isn't too bad on that one but newer vehicles like this have loads of electric/electronic gadgets etc and main dealers won't touch them so someone like me would be left at the mercy of our friends in the motor trade.

I’m looking at elgrands, I’ve been listing after a VW Transporter camper for years and only spotted the Elgrand while shopping for another Japanese import car, they look amazing but sadly because I lived in the city and never needed to drive, I’ve got my first car at 33!

Regarding the insurance being £250 a year, how long am I likely gonna be waiting and owning cars before that’s a reality for me, I’m paying £1500 on a 1.4 coming up to my first no claims bonus and I understand how it is but gosh it’s expensive. If it was £250 I’d realistically be able to have a daily, a camper and a project car on the go :’)

Another option well worth looking at is the Mazda Bongo, but I think they are getting rarer now. As much space as a VW Transporter but about half the price. I had one for some years and it was a great vehicle to drive. Mine was a 2.5 turbo diesel 4 x 4 automatic, and for what it was the fuel consumption was very good. Certainly way better than the Toyota Spacecruiser that I previously had, which only did about 18 mpg.

the OP is quite a few years old, but since it has been resurrected - i dont like bongo's because you have to get out of the cab to enter the accom area or climb over the engine. we had a honda stepwagon camper, brilliant but too small for us 'older' people ......

i also toyed with getting an elgrand as a camper - you sometimes find them already converted but you might have to wait to find one ...

That wasn't a problem for us because our Bongo wasn't a camper, just an 8 seater which doubled as a van, albeit quite a luxurious one. Even if we had converted it though it still wouldn't have been a problem as we invariably get out to stretch our legs when we get to wherever we are going.

Even though it wasn't converted, it still had an electrically-operated elevating roof.

the electric roof is one of the benefits of some of the japanese imports, they do tend to have far higher specs

as for the mpg, you could always convert to LPG .... if it made financial sense of course and intended keeping the vehicle for a long time !

Back in the late 70s - early 80s I had a small light-haulage business and I had two Transit trucks running on LPG. It was brilliant! They were petrol-engined of course and had a change-over switch on the dash so that I could switch back to petrol if I couldn't find gas where I was at the time.
