Part of the reason for not allowing overnight sleeping on the Seafront at Scarborough is one of health and safety, and concerns the risk of overtopping of heavy seas and high spring tides along both bays, particularly the North bay which also has the potential risk of cliff erosion and falling Mudstone slides. The latter is also a risk along the old coastal road along the clifftops of Cayton bay, hence this other previously popular overnight stop for motorhomers has also been included in the overnight sleeping ban.
If these natural occurances were to happen during daylight then at least people would have an alert chance to get out of the way, during the night, whilst in a deep sleep, they may not be so lucky and quickly become a casualty or even a fatality. Its all down to common sence, there are plenty of other cheap and safe places to park other than on the seafront or clifftops.
It was only about 20 years ago that a clifftop hotel suddenly and unexpectedly slid down the cliff face and into the sea along that stretch of coastline, the first the guests knew about anything being amiss was when they heard a thunderlike rumble whilst having breakfast in the hotel's conservatory, followed by huge cracks appearing in the floors and walls around them, 30 mins later, and the whole section had slipped down the cliff, followed over the next 48hrs by the rest of this large hotel.
Scarborough is my second home town, but knowing what l do regarding its Geology, l would never risk sleeping anywhere under one of its cliff faces, whether it was free or not!
