We collected our new to us motorhome from Travelworld last week. We had to return for a few problems to be fixed and whilst there it was recommended that we get the motorhome professionally wax treated and to have the interior treated too. The treatment is also guaranteed.

I posted on another forum asking which company is best and the responses were along the lines of why pay to have someone else do it when you can do it yourself. They all say that the silicone polish you can buy is exactly the same as the polish the professionals use.

Has anyone here any experience of using a professional to do it?

We have just had our motorhome professionally valeted. He got rid of the oxidised paint that was making the finish look dull and then put a wax treatment on it - he uses some professional stuff not sold in the shops although he did recommend Autoglym for a touch up a couple of times per year.

Van now looks lovely and the dirt just falls off with very little effort.

Worth every penny if you ask me. Cost £150 and took him over 6 hours.

The pro stuff comes in large quantity's and they wear masks when using it so it must be powerful stuff.
There are lots of diy sealants available if you google it but it would be a big job to do yourself as the car has to be cleaned and polished first before the paint sealant is applied

Thanks for your replies.

We're still undecided as we were told the cost would be around £500. That said though, the MH is under a year old and having it done now may well keep it looking good for longer.... decisions, decisions!

As your motorhome is under a year old I would be looking for someone to just come and clean and give it a good polish ready for the season.

There should be no oxidised paint on your van that would need an electric buffer on it.

£500*!!!! ???

Even though it's a MH, surely there might be a pro valeter somewhere else that could do it cheaper..???

*MH owner... Seen as someone with more money than sense to some people, if you know how I mean?

Looking at this again, you could have your MH cleaned and polished by a mobile valeter once a year for the next 5 years for less than £500

If its something similar to diamondbrite, you need to use the treatments regularly to maintain its warranty, but it does seem to keep the vans cleaner and easier for the muck to come off.

Our new to us caravan has this, you only have to wash it with soapy water, you don't put any polishes on it.

We had our old caravan professionally cleaned last month (didn't know we were going to Change it) and OH was talking to him, he could have done all the inside too, but we decided our van was a bit old to worry about that.

My daughter had just bought a new car and for £90 I think it was, he said what he had to do is take the paint right back to the original paint, ie take of any polish that has been put on it and then they coat it with this tiny bottle of stuff and the bottle is actually registered to that car and is guaranteed for a few years, can't remember how many but then he said things like bird poo will not stick it just wipes off, rain just beads on it evidently. My daughter is going to try it. OH was amazed by the stuff.

Hi Jules, yes it was Diamondbrite that was recommended to us. We'll probably have it done as its quite a large vehicle and anything that helps keep it clean will be welcome!

I polished our new van with harly wax, which is a carnauba/ beeswax mix:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnauba_wax

20 quid and a day of my time. The professional polishes are no better or worse. Just depends on how much money you want to spend.

Anyway that was 9 weeks ago and it's still looking good. You don't get the annoying white bits on the plastics either.

I valet motorhomes and caravans for a living and in My opinion using sealers on motorhomes and caravans is a waste of money. Most vans are made from GRP, ABS and aluminium, which are designed to flex, sealers don't flex. This will result in premature failure of the sealer. Also after applying a sealer you have to be extremely careful with which products you clean the van with as some will wash the sealer off. If you are still determined to have a sealer applied get it done by somebody who knows what they are doing with motorhomes (Tourershine),as wrongly applied they can make the van look awful.
