We looked at a Chausson Flash today, which was just what we wanted. Then the dealer said that the heating worked off the diesel tank. This is new to me, but this is a brand new MH so it can't be that strange. Can anyone tell me if this is an efficient system? The gas locker is tiny, and really only meant to carry gas for cooking. The water heater is diesel or electric, I believe.
Some like them and some don't. It can be noisy for anyone parked on an adjacent pitch due to the heaters exhaust system. A friends van had diesel heating but were getting tired of complaints so I took it out and replaced it with a gas one.
Not all diesel heaters are the same and NOISY. I am having an Wallas XC Due fitted which can heat as well as provide the heat source for cooking. The first 10 minutes are noisy, but once at operating temperature is reached they PURR very quietly !
I guess I need to hear it running. I can't help thinking that a popular company like Chausson wouldn't use a diesel heater if there were huge problems.

Its all down to cost as they are cheaper than the better ones such as a Truma Combi working on gas.
I don't believe that you will find many fitted to the more expensive motor homes. The Chausson Allegro we owned had a Truma Combi and room for two 13 kg gas bottles.
They are a bit noisy for the first ten minutes or so but after that they are ok. You can use them while driving so the van is nice and warm when you pitch up. We have been skiing twice, Meribel in the french Alps, and no complaints here...
We have had a webasto heater in our van which we have had for six years, we have never had any complaints about noise. I would say it is very slightly noisy for about ten minutes but then you can hardly hear it. If we replaced our van I would want it to have the same heater. We love the fact you can have heating while travelling in the winter and when you get to your pitch the van is lovely and warm. As for cost, we don't think it's expensive. We do carry a small electric heater for when you just need the chill taken out of the van. We would have no worries about this sort of heater.
Absolutely agree with Sandram's comments. Do your research and you will find many advantages of Diesel heating / cooking over Gas. Mainly, I think, the fact that Diesel produces a DRY heat whereas Gas produces a WET heat i.e condensation in motor homes is not a good idea ! Ciao
We have an Eberspacher system with a calorifier fitted to our Autocruise Starburst as a standard fixture, we find it very economical approx 0.6 litres of diesel an hour running flat out but the van and hot water are warm in about 10 minutes then it runs occasionally in the background to keep the set temperature. When on site with a hook up it has a built in immersion heater and fan heater so it uses no diesel.
Since we've had this van a 7kg bottle of propane lasts us around 2 years as it's only used for cooking and the fridge when we have no hook up. As far as we are concerned the noise of the unit is acceptable as it quietens down when set temperature is reached and doesn't bother us at all - all things being equal we would certainly look for one in our next van.
hi we have an Autocruise Starseeker with eberspacher diesel heating system its great and heats up very quickly to be honest i havent noticed it being noisy to sum it up i agree with carlsenior i would be looking for another van with the same system
