up to the present we have always taken cash to pay for our fuel when in france, but in view of what is happening over there just now, is it a good idea to have a lot of cash on hand. anyone got any suggestions of a better and safer way to buy fuel? we will be touring there for about six weeks so quite a lot of cash is involved. we have several debit cards but am told there is a charge for their use.
I don't think there's anything different happening now than what's happened ever before, I think a lot is common sense where you park up for the night.
For your own peace of mind you're better off without wodges of cash in your back pocket. Most debit cards will charge you for using them but on the plus side you'll probably get a better rate of exchange than you would changing it before you went. If it does cost you more to use, it's not a lot in the grand scheme of things.
We have always used a credit card for fuel. However , I have found that cards don't always work in the older automatic pumps in country areas. The really big supermarkets are fine.
All supermarket pumps I have used in last couple of yrs take UK cards, both unmanned 24hr pumps and also the large supermkts with manned booths. Also auroroute aires take cards but diesel often 10cents/litre dearer. France is as card friendly as UK, I have never found the need to carry much cash, atms are everywhere so no probs drawing out if required.
As pointed out, fee free credit card, I use Post Office credit card and Nationwide is still fee free for long standing customers.
We use a Credit Card for all our Fuel purchases. We use a Saga Credit Card (fee free for purchases abroad) and have a DD set up to pay off 100% every month.
We're in France now as I read this post and I must admit that I usually pay cash for fuel - although I do have a small safe onboard for cash, passports, phones and iPads when we're parked up and away from the motorhome.
Don't really know what Dollyannie means by the ' in view of what's happening over there just now' phrase, as you can find trouble wherever you go if you put yourself in the wrong situation - there are a lot of places I wouldn't feel comfortable at stopping for the night in the UK!!
As ever, it's all about common sense.
I would always use a debit card for convenience - even if your bank charges £1.50 per transaction with fuel in France about 30p a ltr cheaper
you are saving £15 per 50ltr top up anyway.
------------- It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.
Hi - we've just come back from touring in Europe. More and more countries are going over to 24/7 automated fuel pumps, and are not staffed at all. You usually have to put your credit card in before filling up. On sundays in France, even the Supermarket fuel stations are often not manned so you do need a credit card.
I have Nationwide debit and credit cards which are both free for me in Europe.
By the way if you are in Ypres, the Aldi there will not take Visa or Mastercard, only Maestro. People were abandoning full trolleys because they could not pay!!
Hi, we use a Nationwide zero-rate credit card, Santander zero-rate credit card or an ICE preloaded card, none of which costs us anything. One of them is bound to work in most 24/24 fuel stations. Happy travelling.
