Wow my first post on this site was what's the best sealant to use for skylight on my motorhome.
If that was all I had to worry about.!!!
Right so I got all set up to reseal skylight and to my absolute horror have discovered that from skylight frame to the back of van is rotten.
I have stripped out cupboards to access the wet area's.
The walls seem to be ok but the roof supports are well and truly finished.
Has anyone undertaken the same job??.Photos would be a great help.
Advice would be a great help.
Im not sure if I should cut rot the out of battens and join or change full lengths.
I doubt if I am the first or last to have such a major problem , help an advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rocker...

Oh dear!...not good...

I haven't had to repair one of our own but as a commercial vehicle body and coach builder(& repairer) in a previous life, I would say when stripping down, be careful that you don't remove too much strength/rigidity..and make sure that you add plenty of diagonal braces, and keep it all square and true, whilst it's still "in bits"(..*as the majority of the average MH's rigidity will come from all of the furniture).

(*although the above may not be too much of an issue, IF the roof skin panels are still in place?)

Obviously, whilst it's in bits, ideally you want to remove/replace as much of the "bad" as you can...BUT...it is very much a judgement call and in some areas it just may not be feasible to fully remove all of the "iffy" timbers..Meaning that splinting/reinforcing them is the only realistic option (done properly- glued & screwed- for a repair, that'd be perfectly okay though).

Presumably, it's just the timbers?(..or has the "rotting" timbers caused the aluminium skin the corrode? )

Hi Pepe
The aluminium skin seems ok .What brought my attention to it in the first place was a couple of bubbles in paint on side of motorhome. Hopefully if I can get it all sorted now they wont become an issue.
I have been inside the van this morning whilst it is raining stripping out and there are leaks all over the place, mainly from the awning rail which has completely rotted the strut on that side of van.
I cant believe with the amount of water in there I never smelt or saw signs of damp.
It is a lesson learned for me and I highly recommend any motorhome owners to reseal awning rails, skylights it is even leaking through screws that hold the roof bars in place.
