Help!...my Hiace camper van (2003, diesel) looses power when starting off..even if I have idled for a few minutes...then looses power intermittently for the first 5 mins or so. Local garage cannot find any fault. Has anyone experienced this please ?

You need to find a place that specialises in diesel engines, sounds to me like the garage didn't want to get involved, go to Google and type in your town + nearest diesel engine specialist,it might help if you put where you lived.

Hi Gill, it could be something simple like a blocked fuel filter. It really is a job for a diesel mechanic to diagnose then fix the problem. I once picked up wet diesel fuel from a big brand service station on the M5. A dose of "wet fuel" treatment from Halfords quickly solved the problem. Water in diesel fuel is quite possible. Hope this helps! Have you let the tank run down lower than normal?

Hi everyone, I'm in the middle of trying to buying a Japanese imported high top hiace. I think they look like great vans but would love some reassurance! My mate says get a VW, my dad says don't touch an import, never done this before !!

The next thing is I think I have found a great looking van for a good price. Have had an RAC inspection done and the engine and gearbox are completely find but there were a number of other things to do. The vendor says he will do all of these so it passes mot... But the whole thing is do I trust him?!

Anyone used 'jap-mpv-specialists' in Uxbridge? Ads on ebay. He wants a deposit before mot-ing and registering with dvla because he says if he mots whenever he will be selling something that is 'losing value' as he then won't be selling it with 12 month mot.. Is it fair to ask for deposit before he does this? He keeps saying it's refundable when we visit to test drive if we don't like it ( it's a long way from home) . Maybe just shows he is confident in his vehicle??

Be v grateful for what anyone thinks

Thanks in advance!! :) :)

Hi..by the sounds of it, any work/sorting out(MOT, DVLA etc) that he feels he needs to do, he'd need to do anyway, whoever buys it?...so he's just making his stock "saleable"..?...

So in that respect, I can't see why you would need to hand over any money, before that was all carried out (besides, who knows how long it will take the DVLA take to sort out their side ?).

but have you not seen it in the flesh yet? If he is holding it for you and waiting for you to go and view, then I can understand them wanting a deposit.(..although personally, I'd want to view and drive anything before I parted with any money).

Having said that, I know that folk order and buy "imports" that haven't yet left the docks in Japan!?...

We've never bought/owned an "import" but we do now run a basic, homemade "camping-van" based on a 2001 Hiace van..and as uncool as it is, after owning it 3 years plus, at 206,000 miles, it still never misses a beat...

Thanks for your reply, and great to hear your hiace is reliable. I agree completely with what you say about the repairs and the vendor also said he would have been doing them anyway.
In the end I asked him for written confirmation of the deposit being refundable which he has happily provided . Mainly I did this because my time with my husband this year is so limited and the weekend we potentially pick it up is one if the few we can spend together in the van, so hopefully we can drive it away and go straight on our hols! If it's a no go then well get the deposit back and book a hotel instead :)
... But hopefully we will be camper-vanning :)

Hi again...

As you say this van is "..a long way from home..", I'd suggest spending  the first night or two  somewhere within range of the place you're picking it up from..

Obviously, you'll make sure everything works when you pick it up..but with the best will in the world the,"..yippee!..picking up new campervan..we're going on our hols!..."  mode will kick in and you will miss to check/ask something.. (we all do!)

So it'd be best to find out about the need to ask any questions or about any issues whilst you're still quite "local"..

As you are heading straight off on your hols, the belt'n'braces side of me says to be prepared just in case something doesn't work..

(eg take a small camping stove, a water container and a  battery lantern etc)

Hi Campernewby the jap spec hiace is a great van and very reliable, but the 2.8 is non turbo is very under powered and if its the 4x4 auto they are very thirsty high twenty's on the open road and down to high teens in town...toyota will supply all parts if you give them the chassis No...good luck..

...maybe  it's better to think of them as "lower powered", rather than under-powered..?

We must  remember that a good many imported Hiace (and similar) campervans are from the *mid-late 90s(even earlier) and even those dated slightly later, may/will still feel a bit crude(less "car-like"?) to anyone more used to the modern crop of euro vans.

(*think how unrefined, noisy and gutless Transits of the era were.  ?)

Our current little Hiace Powervan (2001 2.4 non-turbo.. 80+odd hp?) "camping-van" is a different beast altogether to our previous Renault Master(2.5 150hp)MH and even the little Peugeot X250(2.2 100hp)we had before it...

But,the Hiace is what it is..and does what it does..and just gets driven accordingly .. and being far more basic mechanically, it costs us peanuts to maintain and service, when compared to the other two we had.

(We keep looking out for a more modern replacement...T5?..Vivaro/Traffic? etc..but both seem to be prone to well document and expensive!, faults..?  )

The reason I mention it is because the Hiace supercustom (which the jap vans are based on and not the powervan which you have and is a completely different vehicle) also comes in a 3ltr turbo and a 2.4 turbo though the 2.4 is best avoided as it has known over heating issues...

Hi all, in the end the dealer said no need to worry about the deposit, I asked so many questions he said he knew I was serious and wouldn't be a no show.
We realise it's not going to be very speedy/ the best model, but with a little urgency in getting something and as it looks great otherwise we thought we would give it a year and see how it runs. If we love it before next summer well either upgrade, or we're wondering if you can retro fit a Turbo? Or we can just slow down! :)
Esp thanks for the be prepared advice ( although my husband may not thank you, I'm already rather of that I'll!) now to find somewhere to holiday in uxbridge???

..what is "best"  will be subjective and as for not being "speedy", well there are plenty of folk happily trundling around in old split screen & Bay VWs...

(..I wouldn't even consider messing about retro-fitting a turbo..)

We had a 2007, 7mtr Renault motorhome(owned for 5 years and ran along side the Toyota for it's final 18 months ) but we found that is just wasn't getting used, as the Toyota was just more "fun", so it got sold ....

As long as it all checks out, I'm sure you'll have loads of fun in your van...

Hiya hiac-ers! We bought the van previously mentioned at the weekend. So excited I could burst :)
the dealer is having the electrics converted so we won't have it outside the house for another week, but we want to get away for a trip as soon as we have it so I'm in a flurry of pre- packing preparations. It's a 1995 lwb model with the factory fit cupboards /sink at the rear, any recommendations about how to squeeze stuff in gratefully received!

The info I'm most after however is the measurements of your curtains. This van doesn't have any, but the curtain rails are there, and ideally id like to get these made and ready for when it arrives. I've got a little baby so it takes me an inordinate amount of time to get anything done... Anyone got the same type of van able to help? I've found some really cute material!

Thanks all :)
