I hitched up my Smart car to my Motorhome using an A Frame supplied by Smart Torw and set off for a trip to the New Forest. About half a mile from home the car started jumping around, so I pulled over to take a look. The A Frame is attached to the car utilising the towing eye and creating a second towing eye on the other side of the car. The problem was that the standard Smart towing eye had broken away and this caused the A Frame to be out of balance. I thank heaven that this happened at low speed close to home and not at 60mph on the M25, where the consequences do not bear thinking about.
Apart from the broken towing eye damage to my Smart car was minimal, it could easily have been a write off.
Needless to say I will not be towing with an A Frame again, but will invest in a small trailer,
Just to mention that the towing eye on a Smart is not intended for continuous use so, personally, I would say that who-ever set that system up for you was in the wrong
If you are in the AA, RAC, C&CC or CC you may want to have a word with their Legal departments...
