It's like the old story about saving tables in busy cafes, you walk round with your tray, and so many tables have people waiting for someone in the queue behind you.

In a way, I quite like to have an allocated pitch, it saves a lot of this hassle.

We went out and bought two traffic cones and a length of chain. We pushed the end of the chain into each cone and put a bolt through the link so it wouldn't pull out. We also attached a sign that "This pitch is reserved for xxxx xxx"

Have not had a problem yet, but I am waiting for the day when someone comes along and moves it to another pitch...

I bought a plastic sign from a CC site office. It has "Motorhome Using This Pitch" on it. A bit of string through the holes and it slips over the pitch marker or attached to my waste water bucket.

... i was told to drive around and pitch up on any empty pitch. this we did after unhooking the car from the motorhome, i was just reversing upto the pitch number a woman came screaming that it was her pitch ...

An Off Topic steer here..but we had something similar, a few years back.

We were booking in/paying up at reception and a couple of car/caravans combos pulled  behind us.

The blokes came in to settle up and I noticed one "missus" went on ahead to save "their" pitch..

Anyway, booking in completed, we got back into our van, trundled around the site, went to swing to reverse onto a pitch, to have this woman appear out of a gap in the hedge, waving her arms, shouting "Oh hello!..we're on that pitch"...

Now, if I hadn't have recognised her from reception and being from a van that was behind us, I would've quite happily just pulled onto another pitch...but, petty as it may seem, I wasn't having someone shouting which one was "their" pitch (seemingly based on nothing more than, she was walking  towards it first?!)and especially when their van was still parked at reception, with hubby still booking in!..

She was none to pleased when I pointed out the above...

(..even though we had the pitch, she was still adamant that they were doing nowt wrong by her acting as some sort of forward scouting party and "saving" their  pitch, before their van was fully on site..it seemed it was just , "..what we always do.." )

I have seen this many times, one person in the office and the other waking round with the aquaroll so they can jump the queue. I would have told her where to go too.
I thought all motorhomers used a sign otherwise new arrivals do not know the pitch is occupied and I would not move if the pitch did not have one.
Not hard to make and a sign with the vehicle reg or owners name would be less likely to go missing.
I would use a couple of big tie wraps to fasten the sign, just cut them off when leaving.I always have a bag of them in the van, very usfull.

I've just been to a campsite where we left our chair as a marker and came back to find a rather large tent with three cars a little bit too close which we did mention to the owners. A couple of days later we came back to find another tent pitched close with their car parked almost next to our chair. We pulled up in the gap between our chair and their car and retrieved our chair. I felt like I was in a car park. We went to the owner who gave us another pitch but I do wonder whether he pointed out to them what they had done. Just because I have wheels I'm not sure why I should be squeezed out. I want a sign that indicates I am a massive unit so I get left a Big space though I'm only a T5. Anyone else had this problem on grass? It makes me think I should opt for hard standing when it's busy.

2 cheap small wind breakers to define your pitch.
you can always take them down when you come back.
a sign is ok but it will not stop them taking part of your pitch when you are not there

Sounds like good advice. I did think about that. We may be small but we still need our space.

I like the idea of leaving your dirty water/toilet waste behind! Got to be desperate for the pitch if they are going to move that!

For the record, just grey water (washing up) in the black canister. Toilet water is in the grey canister that's under the loo until it goes to the CDP. Funny, innit, grey water in black canister & black water in grey container....

This year is our first as motorhomers (if that's a thing lol)
Previously we have had trailer tents and folding camper!
And this was the most anoying thing we have found! More so with campsites that don't have numbered pitches!
But you don't give it any thought till you want to pop out for the day then it hits you! And you noticed people with the little signs etc we had one of the fold out picnic benches and the hook up cable left! This seem to do the trick! One of our first times away in the camper we pitched up next to another campervan who desided to head out for tea in the evening
15 mins later a couple with a caravan started reversing in to the spot
Moving the guy deck chairs and unplugging the hook up cable I said to the chap there someone already there he shrugged and carried on!
A further 30 mins must of passed then the guy with camper came back he spoke to the chap with the caravan then gathered his stuff and moved to another pitch! Unsure what was said but the poor guy in the camper got the ruff deal I think!
Iv now also made up a nice little sign also!

It only works if the camper owners remember to put up their sign when they leave. Having found a pitch at a CC site we set up and I went back to reception to get a key for the barrier. "Oh" the warden says "there is a camper van on that pitch". She said not to worry as they should have left a sign up. We still felt bad, even though it wasn't our fault, and spent the next few hours waiting to be accosted by an angry camper van owner every time one drove past. Luckily non stopped, so they must have realised it was their error.
