we have this type of heater when first switched on there is a constant ticking under the van similar to when you ignite your gas cooker any ideas

It's the igniter for the diesel heater, it should stop when the thermocouple gets hot, just like a gas heater.
Do you have the manual for it? The manual should explain how it works.

as above, but also note that it does take some power out of the battery whilst its doing that, that is why I fitted 2 100 amps batteries on my van, no problem.

The ticking could be the fuel pump priming the system if there is some 'backflow' of fuel when it is off.

Agree with John. Ours was a Webasto but the ticking on ours was the fuel pump , pumping normally
