My Peugeot Boxer 2007 Autocruise Starseeker will not start after covering a decent mileage eg 120 miles. It usually starts from cold but I always have a mini charger operating via my mains hookup. I have had a new battery fitted, checked the starter motor, alternator and earth leads. I carry a battery pack and can start my vehicle using this extra power. I am wondering if my new battery is faulty and am even checking my keys.
I am totally frustrated and need some suggestion. I will try a new battery and hope this solves my problem.
Can anyone help?
Cheers Glyn

When you turn the ignition key is the engine actually turning over or not?
If not then a battery condition gauge for under a tenner may help as this will tell you if the battery is defective or not.

you do not mention mileage! if it is rather high then I would suggest you change the glow plugs, on the other hand if it starts well in cold weather, then it may be something else, ie poor compression, diesels rely on good compression to start.

Do you mean that after an extended use or journey that the van won't turn over?

I had a problem with a Fiat Ducato 1.9 diesel, after it had about an hour or more constant driving, when we stopped and tried to restart the the van nothing happened, the battery had a full charge but turn the key and there was nothing happening at the starter motor, we usually had to wait about 30 minutes before we could restart the van and all was normal.

In our case it turned out that excessive heat from the engine bay was causing issues with the starter motor windings soaking up heat and expanding, this was what the AA patrol who attended on the third time of this happening told us, he had a look at the starter motor and the heat shield was missing.

On this particular van the starter was right next to the exhaust downpipe, a quick trip to a van breakers provided us with a heat shield off a Fiat Scudo with the same engine and we never suffered with this problem again.

Edited to add if you google starter motor heat soak it's a common problem.

Changing the glow plugs, starter motor problems, poor compression. All or any are possible. Get it checked out by a good grease monkey. Ciao

Does the engine crank over quickly, or does it struggle to turn over? If it turns over quickly, but does not catch, suspect the glow plugs or an air leak in a fuel line. If it is sluggish to turn over suspect a problem in the electrical side of it.

I would get an auto electrician to see if there is a battery drain when the engine is not running, this is quite simple to do and should not cost too much. You can do it yourself its quite easy with a a multi meter.
I assume that the habitation battery is not in anyway connected to the starter battery?
You mentioned that the earth leads have all been checked- did you also get the earth lead from the engine to the chassis checked( you can only do this from underneath the van)? Ducatos have a reputation for this earth lead corroding or coming loose. I think there is a thread on this somewhere.

I have had exactly the same problem with my 2005 boxer. After checking and changing everything it turned out to be the earth strap going from the bodywork to the gearbox. It's a really simple fix, just get a new earth strap available from places like halfords and connect it directly to the battery negative and bolted onto a good and solid bolt on the engine. Voila! Sorted!! Had no problem since!!

Any problems just ask!!

I had a similar issue on a 2007 Citroen Relay. I fixed it by replacing the starter motor. The starter motor had metal particles in the motor effecting its operation. The symptoms appeared to be those of a low battery voltage with the starter motor turning the engine over slowly and eventually starting. With the new starter motor fitted it turns over and starts within seconds now. Mine is the new shape with the 2.2 engine.

Glad to hear your problem was sorted. georga, I had a similar problem to clarkwgrizwold, slow turn over for years, on starting. It eventually died on us. A new starter motor was amazing. Fast turn over and starting like a petrol engine.
