When that happened to ours, it meant air was getting in somewhere. It was a crack in the filter one time, sorted by a new filter. (The second time was more serious - our water heater was leaking, but the pump kept running which yours isn't doing.) Just trace all your pipes for starters. We turned off the pump as it used to grumble now & then through the night.
