Hello, we are looking at changing from a caravan to a motorhome. Still have 2 teenagers with us so need 4 travelling seats. Like the look of rear U shaped lounge. Budget Around £12k max. Any advice welcome, good or bad, what to look out for when looking.

Chris

damp damp damp , but with 4 of you, maybe good to get one with sleeping above cab, all batteries are good, coach built ones are best a bit pricey but even the older ones seem well maintained lots of things to look for but youd look anyway like you do when buying anything good hunting check ebay out youll get a good idea at what you can get for your pennies, and at this time of year theres always a deal to be had.

I gave much thought to our 'van' purchase. Decided that cheapest, British, new and local was the way to go. Any problems can then be sorted more easily. You say 4 people to travel. It is the law that 4 travel seats are required. Rear lounge models do not very often offer that unless it has 2 lounges. You need to do a lot more looking. I think you should look at drop down bed options myself. Some such as Chausson, Rapido, have been in production a few years now, and there will be quite a few used models for sale. The number of travel seats debate has been going on for years now. But it is a no brainer. No body should travel unrestrained. In car, lorry, truck, taxi, bus, and even airplanes. Check out interior layouts from your armchair on here....when you find a model that suits the 4 of you.....go take a look at some. One thing.....do you have a driveway, or will you need storage for it. Happy Hunting...but it is not going to be easy on any budget.

Why not go to the nec show? I know you are not buying new, but it gives a good idea about layouts. It took us a year to choose, but in the end went for an electric bed drop down. Loads of living space and a fixed bed in a 6m van.

We bought our first motor home a few weeks ago (just at the start of the school holidays, when sites are overrun with ankle-biters every weekend lol).

It took us a year to find what we wanted. We decided early on not to look at anything a long way away, and cheap vans (our budget was a lot less than yours) seem to be rarer than hen's teeth in the south-east. It took us 9 months to find one.

We did a lot of snooping before we decided what we wanted. We peered through the windows of parked motorhomes like peeping toms and struck up conversations with anyone we encountered parked up with a motor home who didn't look like an axe-murderer.

We realised quite quickly that we didn't want a monster that would be impossible to park in most car parks, so that gave us a length limit. We then decided we liked the rear lounge layout, as it gives good visibility to the rear when driving and means you can get a panoramic view when parked up in nice places. That narrowed it down still more.(There's only us plus the dog, so number of seats for passengers isn't an issue).

A couple of helpful MH folk warned us off conversions because of insurance complexities and other issues that I can no longer recall.

Mr Fran then researched all the possible downsides and known mechanical problems of the few models we were left with, and by then we had a shortlist of about 4 options.

Daily searching of all known UK websites that list motorhomes for sale yielded nothing in our price range this side of York or Yeovil for months. Then blow me, one day there were 2 for sale within 40 miles. We arranged to see the one 10 miles up the road within a couple of hours, left a message for the other, and bought the first one we saw, having given it a very thorough going over.

Everything on it worked, but it didn't come with any manuals, so we had an entertaining few weekends trying to fathom it all out. It's almost exactly what we wanted: Elddis Eclipse with rear lounge, bang at the top of our price range (£4k) and all that we would want to add are an oven, a canopy and power steering, all of which is doable.

Providing we still like it in a year's time, we'll either do those things or upgrade to a van that has it all already.

My advice would be, in a nutshell, work out what you want and be patient till you find it. We love ours, and don't think we could have done better for the money without travelling all over the place.

The responses to this thread are interesting. We have given this much thought and decided that ideally we have a U shaped rear lounge, not bothered about a fixed bed, a centre seated area to give the extra travelling seats required for the two teenagers. The only issue I see is that the length is getting longer. This then leads to parking issues, though we don't intend spending much time parked in a supermarket car park. Oh! We intend to use it for the odd weekend but hoping to use it in Europe, so was considering LHD. Your experience and opinions still welcome

Maybe consider weight limits? If four of you in a van then maybe you are looking at vans over 3500 kgs anyway.

Always check how much payload you will have on any van. The four of you will eat into the amount easily on most vans with a 3500 kg gross weight.

Parking isn't usually a problem in the likes of supermarkets but you may find it more difficult to squeeze down some lanes to beaches etc.

Lastly, the longer the motorhome the more you pay on ferries. Depends where you are thinking of going in Europe but ferry costs can mount up if you chose desinations with multiple crossings involved.

To a large extent our experience of buying our motorhome echos that of fran1000, except that we were prepared to travel to get what we wanted. Indeed we did go & see several that were some distance away, and nearly bought one (withdrew following full inspection report which threw up numerous issues -the cost of the report saved us from making an expensive mistake so was worth it). In the end we bought one fairly local to us which just came onto the market at the right price and we were quick off the mark (it was such a good one it wouldn't have hung around for long!)

Yes, I spent months trawling the internet, searching all the motorhome sites I could find. We looked at as many as we could which gave us an idea of what we wanted & what to look for. Generally most motorvans in our low budget were either older than we wanted, or in poor condition, or both and were were getting despondent.

Then we came across our van which was within budget and had only just been put up for sale so we were the first to see it, it was in superb condition inside and out and mechanically, had no signs of water ingress or damp, had low mileage and very full history, drove well, everything worked, etc.

So, research, go & look at loads, and patience - your perfect van is out there somewhere. When you find the van of your dreams, if you are at all unsure then consider an independant inspection - it could save you from making an expensive mistake - it did us on one van we almost bought!

Well, after a day looking at several motorhomes from several dealers, we are a little more unsure as to what o go for, unless a lottery win comes along. Our thoughts was for a U shaped rear lounge that would convert to two singles. I thought the Elddis Autoquest 180 would suite but seats too short, will only make a double.
A very helpful sales chap was trying to convince us that the rotating captains chairs are very comfortable, but not convinced. We are used to long lounge seats typically in a caravan, ideal for 'lounging'.
We need 4 x 3 point travelling seats so the mid seating with a table looks ideal.
Any advice on suitable models?? Please.
Chris

When we moved from caravan to MH with our teenagers we visited several local dealers to get a feel of what was on offer, then looked for the layout we wanted on Ebay and Autotrader. We had had fixed bunks in the caravan, and decided that was what we wanted in a MH. Our layout is transverse bunks at the back, overhead cab (no making beds at all for us!!). The table has two belted forward facing seats, a side bench and swiveling front seats. These are fab! They keep the overall length down to 6m, but the MH always seems roomy. It is a Chausson Welcome 17 if that helps, and we love it!

Have you tried the motor home magazine that had all the layouts in the back. It also then has lists and you can then pick out all of those with 4 travelling seats. I know these tend to be newer models but it gives you a starting point otherwise it can be a nightmare!! The nec can be worth visiting, it gives you a chance to look at different layouts.
We changed from a 3 seat to 4 seat for our grandchildren and it took a while before we found the right one.

What knowledge out there of the Swift Kon Tiki 640 (Vogue), they seem to meet our needs?
Oh, advice on what kit is needed, ie waste master, water roll etc, we have a load of kit with the caravan and not sure what to keep or give away with the caravan.
Not sure if I mentioned our price range, as it's our 1st motorhome we do not want to spend silly money. Quite happy to look at an older model just to get the experience, so ideally up to £15k, but might go to £20 if a bargain newer model.
Keep bringing on the advice. All comments are read and appreciated.
Chris

Slightly different, but we upgraded from a tent to a VWT5 this year - I thought we knew how we wanted it converted but after using it extensively this year realise that we have to do some further work on the layout. so what
I'm suggesting is after you've been to the various shows why not hire one for the weekend and see what is important to you after that.? But, we had deliberated about buying one for years and I think unless we had made a snap decision this could have gone on for ever. luckily it seems to have worked out well!

My OH and I decided that we wanted to travel so she could see the world that I had experienced with my work. We talked about what we wanted - I refuse point blank to tow and my argument is if I wanted to pull something around I would have become skipper of a tug in a harbour. There are other reasons too but that is another story! We decided what we didn't want - an over cab bed for a start, which was a beginning. We eventually - after a very long (30 months) search located a MH that met our requirements. Two bench seats that can be used as beds or be made into a double bed. Perhaps we might like a slightly bigger MH but what we have suits us. We have been to Spain several times in it both Summer and Winter Take your time decide what you don't want as much as what you want. Why buy a 4 berth if there is only 2 of you?
