Hi All,
I have discovered damp/ Rot on the floor of my Motorhome which appears to be caused by a bad seal around the side storage hatch (Fixable I think).
My question is how are the sides attached to either the floor or the chassis as I cannot find any fixings and the side does move a bit!
TIA
Steve Clark
Hi Steve, The builders usually make a square hole in the floor, then drop the locker into it. It is then secured inside where the walls meet the floor. All this on mine is covered with plastic sheeting and carpets, which must be removed to see how they have built and secured it.
If body is built like a caravan of same age then construction would have begun with floor on chassis. Floor will be ply/foam/ply/carpet sandwhich. Internal furniture would then have been added & then sides/front/rear & roof would have been added. Fixings would have been screws, staples & sealant.
So to repair after 27yrs you work backwards from that. Theres no definite way, you just deconstruct & reconstruct.
Screws & staples will have rusted away, sealant will have hardened & let water in. All you do here is clean up, dry it out & any way you can, reinforce with wood, Isopon P40 & PU sealant.
Thanks for that, Bill, That is what I have started to do today after finally getting the Van dry. As above I just couldn't figure how the sides were fixed so I am going to brace the side internally.Hopefully that should work
Another tip for you Scarkey. You should use stainless steel screws for caravans and motorhome repairs. But, how do you know which is which from a box of screws. Well, stainless steel screws cannot be picked up with a magnet.
