We are considering buying a campervan however before we start looking I would like to know if the insurance/road tax is expensive. We both drive the Mrs is 53 and I am 65 years old. Any advice will be much appreciated.
Not "campervan" , nor insurance specifically, but someone else raised a similar question re: Motorhome running costs, some of the responses will/may be relevant.
Hi As most motorhomes and are based on a light goods vehicles they are taxed as such (£230 i think for our transit base) insurance will depend on how much you use it. I think the average motorhome mileage is about 4000 miles per year and you can get specialist deals.
------------- It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.
Do not go near 'over 50s' policies.
Some insurance companies are obscenely expensive. They seem to think that if you're over 50, you're automatically rolling in cash and spend your life touring the south of France.
However, I get my insurance through the CC and pay around £160 pa fully comp, protected NCB for myself and OH.
Tax is £230 for most vans.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Thanks for that I have been told in the past that if your retired or just retired (They always ask for your D.O.B first) they will treat you as you have said.
Also been told to watch out if I go to a dealer they will also "try it on". There again some say keep away from Fleabay.
At 65 most if not all insurance companies will charge more, we know, as my OH has reached that age and that's what we've found. Apparently though, when you get to 70, it's the same again but worse (so I'm told!).
Try Comfort Insurance, they really are reasonable.
As for buying the campervan, I don't think I'd buy off Ebay; you need to go to different dealers to see what's out there and you need to try a few out. A big dealer will have a good selection to look round. Also, you do get warranty when buying from a dealer, which varies in length according to the vehicle.
