Hi all this is our first winter with out 1996 Toyota hi ace camper van. It was a direct import from Japan and we're keen to keep it in the fab condition it's in. There int anywhere inside we can winter it is we have bought a cover. It's a general one and seems to cover it well and is strapped round.

When we put some de humidifiers in the other day there was a kind of musty smell outside and it did feel a bit damp. It is a breathable cover and had been raining recently but we're a bit worried that we're actually just going to be keeping the van gentle damp all winter which is the opposite of what we wanted!

What do you guys do to look after your can over the the winter? Is covering it the best way to protect it?

Keep it uncovered & drive it regularly about 10miles or more. Covering it will just cause it to rust from the inside outwards.

Wash it as often as you can, and apply a good quality wax protection, and as mentioned use it whenever its convenient, but I would refrain from going out in it if the roads have been salted. Also remember when washing to give the inside wheel arches a good hosing to remove clinging mud.

Really will the cover just encourage the damp then? Looks like we might even get out in it his week as its warmer than it was in July! Hxx

You need as much interior ventilation as possible to allow throughflow of air. Biggest enemy is interior condensation on metal body underneath furniture which will cause interior rust on metal that probably has just a thin coat of primer.
