Please can anyone help? I have a Toyota Hiace camper the alternator needs replacing made a start removed drivers seat & panel not much room to work but from what I can see the alternator seems to have some kind of cooling system. I am afraid to go any further because if it needs bleeding when replaced I would not know how to do it.I have worked on my own cars all my life but have not seen this on a alternator before.
It may help if you purchase a Haynes manual for the vehicle first as it would be a guide and explain what the cooling system incorporates and if any special tools are required. That would be the cheapest option for starters then make your decision from that knowledge whether the job can be undertaken by yourself or not.
You sure it is not the vacuum pump for the brake servo?

I agree that a workshop manual( IF available?) would be something I'd be getting hold of (..as online info' and UK based forums etc seem quite scarce for Hiaces..)

I have worked on almost any make of cars and vans in my lifetime and never heard of a water cooled alternator,
Quite a few Beemers use them.

There is a vacuum pump on the alternator to assist braking and is oil fed from the engine as far as I know.
Been doing a bit of Googling, due to the amount of time since I left the motor-trade, it is a vacuum pump for the brake servo that runs off the back of the alternator and it looks like it does have an oil feed from the engine.
Sorted!

Thanks all for your help everyone. jimsmimm it was imported in 2003 & converted to a camper van in 2007 by Wellhouse, it has a 5L 3 liter engine. The pipe comes
off the side of the alternator which does not have a vac pump on the back of it, thanks once again for your help
