We have a converted minibus motorhome!
Ever since Iv finished it iv been fancying an awning
Ideally a fiamma f45 or similar would be what I'm after
But they don't come up second hand often and recently buying a house I don't think I can justify a new one!
I'm also interested in a drive away type one but ones that doesn't
Fix on to a awning rail! As I'm not overly keen on fitting a awning rail to our fibre glass roof.
Anyone any experance with this type of awnings? Are they any good?
I'm more Just looking for a sun canopy/shelter than a extra room
I would be greatfull for Any other ideas or advise
Pete

Not exactly what you asked for, but you asked for any other ideas. We have an Airwave 2.5m x 2.5m pop up waterproof gazebo with sides. Apart for shading us from sun, it's dealt with heavy rain and wind. Lots of sizes available, this one is big enough for the two of us to eat a meal at a table comfortably.

Oh, okay. Not come across not allowed, one in Wales and one in Derbyshire asked us to pay extra. Pitched it for no extra charge in 2 others in Wales, 1 in Yorkshire and at a festival.
Others may know differently, I suppose it may depend on the size of the pitch.
Maybe a huge Motorhome (which ours isn't) with an equally large gazebo might be a no no.

Hi Pete...

We've had three "Wind-out" canopies(2 Fiamma & 1 Omnistor) and even when staked/strapped down, unless a full "room" is fitted (which we didn't have) they are only really  suitable for use as a sunshade or for light,"wind -free" showers....

We always strapped ours down but still would never leave it unattended when "deployed". ( I've also read that quite a few reckon  that the full "rooms" are bulky and heavy to lug about and can be a bit of a b*ll ache to put up?)

If you are able fit a "wind-out", then would you not also be able to fit a decent one-piece awning rail? (eg *Attach the 'rail  to a length of rigid aluminium  box section, which then in turn is attached to the van as you would've attached the "wind-out"?).

I found that having  a sturdily attached  awning rail would lent itself to being more versatile.

(*I did something similar to the above on a previous van. only with that I mounted an additional awning rail to the underside of our Fiamma, via a length of angle, so that I could slide in our tarp canopy and use our simple/cheap/quick to erect  "caravan" porch).

We also had a Movelite "Square" drive-away awning at one stage but that got sold before it was used in anger...as we realised that we wouldn't actually have been  driving away from it anyway!

("stand alone" gazebos aren't always welcomed on some sites due to them being vulnerable to getting blown across site......)..

Have you had a look at pole and clamp systems popular with the VW owners for attaching awnings to the gutter on many vans.

I have used this tent as an alternative to an awning on my van.
It does not attach to the van but can be pitched very close and also has the advantage of being extremely quick to put up
I bought a second one as they can be linked together to make a substantial sized awning and they have stood up to some of the worst weather I've ever camped in.

We have a hi-top VW and attached an awning rail to the fibreglass quite a few years ago and have no problems.
We have an awning like this.
And a simple sheet as per my profile picture (purple bus)- I think it was attached to the gutter in this (very old) photo
We also have a canvas free standing awning. It's very sturdy and roomy, but is heavy and takes up a lot of room. Fine if you're staying on site for a few days and want to use your vehicle, but as we normally only stay a night or 2 we find one of the other 2 suits us better.

Cheers for the replys guy gave me lots to think about!
I never heard of the pole and clamp way of doing it!
Rabbitboy
Do you think think the awning rail would be strong enough to take
A fiamma caravanstore type awning?
Cheers
Pete

Pete - Sorry I have no idea, my husband (rabbitboy) does the practical stuff.
It might be ok while stationary on site, but I'd be concerned about the constant weight on the roof and the bouncy around while driving.

Hi again Pete..

This link shows the usual methods of attaching an awning/tarp

http://www.driveaway-awnings.co.uk/fixing-a-driveaway-awning/

We've faffed around with most of them at some stage or another , but after it all, for a dependable method of attaching an awning/tarp- one that isn't going to let go or rub the paint off or clatter on the roof of the van as soon as the wind gets up - we eventually found that a securely mounted awning-rail ended up being the best option for us.

Having said that, our rail(s) weren't actually fitted directly to the van wall (but to the Fiamma wind-out and, currently, on a section attached to our roof bars).

Not knowing how "sturdy" your Hi Top sides are, it may be worth releasing any inner lining, so that you could look at strengthen the inner face (using aluminium section or timber battens?).

Also use the likes of Sika'  to seal it, not silicon.

Edit to add: Forgot to second  idetika's  recommendation  for Quechua Base tent

Hi pepe63
Cheers for that! Some good info there!
I'm thinking about just putting a awning rail on now and see how we get on with it! I agree it could be easily screw through and on to a wooden batten for extra strength.
The reason I mention fiamma caravanstore awning is there is one for sale near by pretty cheap but unsure if I should go for it!
I do like the idea of them being stored on the side of the van basically just because it one less thing I have to find somewhere to store it in the camper!
Pete

I can understand that...but being a bit belt'n'braces, I'd tend to echo rabbitboy's ( or Mrs rabbitboy? ) concerns over having the weight and any stresses, flexing etc that may occur when having it  permanently hanging and flapping from the van wall?...

Slightly left-field maybe but are there any roof/ladder rack bars available for your model of van?..because if there are, then a set of those would give you something to attach a rail to?

(They'd also lend themselves to mounting the likes of roof boxes, solar panels etc, which may crop further  down the line?....)
