Advise needed please!

There is a Toyota Hiace Camper that I am interested in buying. It's listed as a 1994 year, just under 60'000 mileage and seems to be in very good condition. I checked the MOT history on the DVLA site and all seems well, got lots of history and is showing as a 1994 Hiace. However when I did a HPI check (only basic) it showed as a Hiace 1994, Motor home / caravan, first registered on road June 2003. I thought this was quite odd so did another check and the info I found was - a Toyota Hiace panel van with a number plate first registered in Sheffield in 1993, that was first used on the road on 1st June 2003...so now I'm even more confused!

Surely the van hasn't been off road for 9 years lol! There's only 2 things I can think of, one being that maybe it was converted and re-registered as a motor home in 2003...or there's something very dodgy about it!

Anyone come across something like this before?

It could be a 1994 vehicle that was imported and registered in the UK in 2003 and given an age related registration. It's probably just a Grey Import and nothing to worry about.

You need to pay for a full HPI check before buying. If number plate has been the same since 1994 then it was UK supplied as panel van in '94 & converted to camper in 2003 with DVLA classification changed to campervan.

Otherwise it was a Japanese grey import supplied new in Janpan in '94 & imported to UK in '03. Are the numberplates front & rear standard UK size or are they the square with smaller numbers/letters? If small then it is Jap grey import as this non standard size numberplate is allowed on imports with non UK size numberplate fixings.

Thanks guys!

It has the square number plates front and back, so guess it's a grey import. Obviously going to do a full HPI after I've given it a good look over & test drive, just to be safe.

Japan drives on same side as UK so there is a grey import market for their secondhand vehicles to UK. Not so much now though as £/Yen exchange is not as good as in the 90s when there were loads about.
