We've just bought a LWB Citroen Dispatch for mountain bike race events & as our camping vehicle (still tenting!)

We want one of those wind-down awnings (eg Fiamma) to give us some shade when camping in France etc or shelter when working on the bikes at races.

Looking for any advice on good but reasonably priced ones, things to watch out for, installation services. We're in NE England but willing to travel a bit if required.

Does adding one add much to insurance premium?

Thanks

Hi Spiritburner,

I'm not an expert on the insurance premium, but when I get my VW California insured, they ask all sorts of questions, but have never asked about the wind out awning.

Mine came fitted as standard, but if I were fitting one myself this foxwing looks amazing. not cheap though.

Would just  a simpler tarp type canopy suffice?

If your van has OE roof rack fixings on the roof, you could look at utilising them to attach an aluminium section of sorts, which could then have an awning rail attached to it...?

We've had one of these since about 2007-8(ish).

It can get a bit flappy and it can  "pool" if/when it rains heavy (but I now tend to use an additional upright pole with a tennis ball on the end, stuffed up in the middle, so that solves that)

I'm looking for something more fitted. It looks like I'm going to need to fit roof bars to bolt the Fiamma to though.

Just come off the phone with insurance & got a quote on current insurance to change vehicle - with different vehicle, 2 extra seats & canopy fitted the increase is negligible. The insurance co were only bothered if I was converting it to a camper with fitted fridge etc which I'm not.

Friends used to have a Landie 110, with a roof tent and a side canopy

No idea the make of the canopy but it was something like this:

..and having had two Fiammas and one Omnistor, personally if we're  ever looking again, we may give  the more robust "4x4" type a look

(that Foxwing looks really cool )..

We have just a concerted lwb dispatch and added a Thule wind out awning. Didn’t impact insurance as covered as a part of the conversion.

Cool. Old thread is this. We got a Fiamma in the end. The van has since been converted from a race van to a camper too!
