Hi...We only switched from tents 8-9 years ago and since then we've had 3 "proper" vans (one '03 Transit based Duetto and 2 coach-built MHs), our current van is just a basic low roof Toyota camping(not camper)van..

Firstly, I'd say try to pin down what you'll want to do with it- How many will it need to accommodate?- How much on-board kit do you really need?- Do you want/need it to be dual purpose?-  etc etc...

Once loaded with "going away stuff", anything VW Transporter/Bongo/Hiace sized can  be very snug to "live-within", so all will *benefit from using some form of outside shelter/tarp/awning. So, with that in mind would it need to be fully fitted out?

With the VWs/Bongos etc we see on 'sites, most of the living and cooking seems to be done outside; under a tarp or in an awning, with the vehicle only really be used as the "bedroom"....it's how we use ours..

 ....as your other half is handy/practical, would spending the money on a tidy, newer (windowed?) van and fitting it out with a detachable/lift-out kitchen pod(that could also be used in an awning) and a fold-down bed, be an option ?...

Edit- Just to add, we switched from the "proper" vans because they were too "single-purpose" for our needs...and the coach-built Mhs were just too "delicate"....
