Hi folks, anyone camped isle of Arran whether it was wild or campsites? Should be there just after Easter for 3-4 days, thanks, David.

Arran was an old stomping ground of mine. I saw it every morning from home.
I've wild camped in Glen Rosa and up on Goat Fell and other hills. I don't know about any 'proper' campsites, though.
Easter is early this year so it could be cold and there could be snow. You could also end up with beautiful weather. Arran seems to have it's own microclimate.

We too used to camp at Glen Rosa, but now there are several proper camp sites with facilities.

As Ewen said, Arran has a climate of its own.
Just a few hundred yards from the ferry at Brodick you can hire cycles, great if the weather is good.

Had a great few days 3 years ago on campsite at Seal Sands on far southern end of island - didn't book but managed to move to a hard-standing pitch (only about 6 of them)on our second day. A wonderful location near beach and next door to a friendly hotel with good food and live music. (I joined in with the local acoustic/folk band with 'me guitar and got free drinks!) As name suggests seals basking on rocks nearby as well as sea otters!

Heard mixed opinions about Glen Rosa.(noisy, dirty, full of midges etc!)

On our last night we camped free at northern end of Brodick in car park next to beach (ready for the early morning ferry)Local tourist office folks very helpful - even seemed surprised that we asked permission first! Good Chinese take -away near car park if you are feeling oriental.

There is also a decent looking site near the Lochranza ferry at northern end of island.We also checked a couple of 'CL's but they didn't look too inviting.

Great place - we also parked for the day by Brodick Castle whilst me and our spaniel jogged up and down Goat Fell. Very happy days amongst very friendly people despite (or even because of) the very changeable weather! Good bus service - covers whole island in a figure of eight route.

Ah, Glen Rosa isn't dirty if you go right up. Bit of a slog with everything on your back over the hills from Brodick.
The first time I was on Arran was with my dad and Malcolm Slesser to do Goat Fell and the Mauvais pas. I must have been about 10 or 11.
Won a bottle of Sherry at a tombola in Brodick which my dad let me have a tipple of. Malcolm Slesser was a mountaineer and a half and thought Goat Fell was a fine hill.

Thanks for the replies, we will head that way regardless of the weather, we were not too sure if the local people were too keen on wild campers never having been there but looking at the campsite search there are 2 or 3 sites about. If time permitted we would liked to have crossed at Lochranza and headed up to Oban for Mull.

I see Arran from my house. You can wild camp round the island e.g. North Sannox or over in the big lay bys on the west coast. But you may not be alone and it may be party party all night judging by the evidence left behind. Arran is in easy reach of he Central Belt, and now the RET (road equivalent tarriff) has kicked in, it's much much cheaper to take a vehicle over. As for sites, read the UKCS reviews - each site has its fans. I go over several times a year, search on the forums here as it's been discussed often already.
