I have just had an NV200 Nissan converted which I think is the bees knees. Has an easily big enough bed for 2 and full cooking/sink/fridge/heater/solar panel awning possibilities within a 1.695m wide by 2.4m length footprint (about the size of a VW Beetle) and pop up roof. Can be parked anywhere, is euro 6 rated, and can get 57/gallon mileage. 110 punds road tax. Need I go on ? Obvoiusly depends whether you want a "home" on wheels in which case you are limited where you can go. Good luck

I guess it depends largely on how big you want it to be. Of the larger vans, there is probably good reason why almost everyone uses the Fiat Ducato as a base vehicle, and I have certainly been happy with my current one, and the one I had previously.
On the smaller side, I regularly drive a new Vauxhall Vivaro 1.6 BiTurbo and that is a great van that drives as comfortably as a car and is very economical.

I have heard bad things about Fiat, how about the Transit.

If front wheel drive is okay for your needs, then the X250(onwards) Fiats/Peugeots/Citroens would probably be top of my list, due to the fact that they are wide enough internally to have a decent sized lateral bed..and with the sides quite upright /square, they give a good feeling of space...
(Years ago I was hell bent on a Hi top, rear wheel drive, Iveco..but after looking at a few I was struck at how "cramped" they felt inside, due in no small part to their sloping sides).

I want to like the new Transit..but it hasn't grown on me yet....

As for which is "best", well all "makes" will have their specific "issue(s)", but unless you get a complete lemon most modern vans should do the relatively easy job of carting a couple of campers around..

I think the problem I have with the larger vans I have seen which have been converted to a camper is the restrictions that come with driving a larger vehicle i.e parking, unable to negotiate the smaller byways and fuel useage. The bed I have is 140cm wide to the head area with 112cm to the foot area - big enough for 2 people. Also has all the necessary additions to qualify for a motorhome fridge, cooker/heater/sink plus a pop up roof.

We are now on our 2nd PVC. First was a VW T4 which was 5.1m long and the current van is a Fiat Ducato at 5.5m long. We've used them as our only transport for over 15 years and have never had a real problem in parking or getting to places, apart from where there are height barriers but you get this with any van except pop tops.
The size will also depend on how the OP will use it. We dislike pop tops due to the fact we camp in the van year round for long periods and feel they are colder when the roof is up and lack the internal space and storage of a high top, but that's a personal choice. Two of have camped all over Britain and Europe for up to a month at a time in both vans but bought the Fiat when we retired for the layout and extra space and the onboard loo as this suits us better for the longer trips of up to 2 or 3 months at a time that we do now.
The fuel usage has been about the same in both at about 32mpg.
The VW was a dream to drive and very well built with the bodywork as good as new when we sold it when it was 12 years old. Mechanically is was sound and gave us no trouble. However a small motorhome based on a VW T4 that we had between the PVs for a very short time was a nightmare mechanically and was the worst vehile we have ever owned (and that’s saying something!).
I see the OP has a Fiat Ducato so is obviously familiar with them. They did have a problem a few years back but this does seem to have been sorted now. Our Fiat is 12 years old. It feels less well built and more 'van like' to drive than the VW but has mechanically been just as reliable. The bodywork, apart from some surface rust around the sills which we are having dealt with next month, is good. Regular servicing on both has, I think, been the key.
Consequently I think the answer to the OPs question is that most of the vans used for PVCs now are much of a muchness. They have their own fans but also have had their own problems over the years and, I suspect, always will so the answer is to find a van, research any known faults/problems with the make and model and then take it from there. I also endorse what Pepe63 says about the style of the different makes and the difference that they can make to the layout and internal space though. There is also cost with VWs and Mercs attracting a premium while LDVs are a bit cheaper.
So far as convertors go there are now companies all over the country who will do it for you. It really depends on what you want and your budget. We looked into it before buying both vans before finding what we wanted in a ready converted van. Google camper van convertors on the net and you will get pages of them. We did this and then made a short list. We looked at reviews etc on the net and then visited them. They were all happy to talk with us and let us see their conversions and workshops so we could gauge their standards etc. and were happy to provide costings. Some even had a choice of suitable unconverted vans already in stock if you wanted to buy them.
Our friends went ahead and did have a custom conversion made but sadly have never been happy with it. I asked them yesterday and they said their advice would be to choose a convertor not too far away from where you live so that you can check on progress, be very clear about what you want, and get the specifications in writing, especially of it's not 'off the shelf' and most importantly agree a finish date and include it in the contract. They didn't do this and the convertor, who was more or less a one man band, decided to take some time off and then made excuses about ‘waiting for parts’, even though these were available from the internet with short delivery dates, so they ended up waiting for over 8 months despite a quote of a 3 month completion time and missed a whole summers use as a result.
Good luck. :-)

Thanks chrisansandra for all your work with that reply. I thought that would might be the first move is to find a builder and pick his brains.

With a built in diesel heater, a pop top being cold should not be a problem. I chose a vehicle base which drives and acts like a car so size issues would be negated. The end of the day it is all down to personal choice. However, I agree with Chrisandsandra that it makes sense to get a contract in writing with a given time scale for the work in hand. A nearby converter too makes sense. My own naivety meant a wait of some 11 months from the converter receiving the van from Nissan, to actuallygood luck finishing the conversion. Good advice is to get an agreed time schedule.

Re: Convertors.

Stating the obvious but, "agreement" or not, do check them out thoroughly..

The kit that'll be fitted will be easily available, with even the likes of completed cabinet work "kits" now being sold online/ebay etc, so that , coupled with a flashy website, means it'd be pretty easy for someone to set themselves up as a "converter"

I'm not at all rubbishing the smaller builder, just make sure they are competent at all aspects of the job in hand.

All good sense above. Just to add a bit more from my experience w.r.t. base vehicles:

1. Have had 3 Fiat Ducatos of each different 'type' since 2002. All good and reliable.
(The first x250's (2008 to 2010 ish) suffered a 'design fault' with reverse gear causing severe vibrations but all good now I understand.)
We meet many other Fiat based MH owners in our club at frequent rallies - rarely hear of problems with the Fiat base vehicle, and as Fiat command over 40% of the MH base vehicle market feel sure that any major issues would be explored in the MMM and Practical Motorhome mags.(Indeed it was the Stoddarts of the MMM that successfully fought the case on behalf of readers re the reverse gear judder problem a few years ago.)

2. We test drove other options at our last MH replacement. Still preferred the overall driving experience of the Ducato compared with a similar priced Ford and a much higher priced Mercedes. (Guess choice also somewhat depends on whether you prefer RWD to FWD ?)

3. Re 'driveability' and parking etc would agree that a PVC (with width of 2.05M and length of under 6.0M) is closest to the 'ideal compromise'. (If this exists?!)

Note we went for a coachbuilt because we needed more storage space than in a PVC - especially for my wife's mobility scooter but our current choice is still under 6.00M long and not much wider than the various Adria PVC options.(Might be useful for you to look at the latter if only to see the different layout designs)

Just one more point.

One of the reasons we were going to get a van converted rather than buy one 'off the shelf' was to get our preferred layout (more or less that of our current van, a Murvi Morello) on our preferred vehicle (a VW Crafter, Merc or similar).

What we found was that many convertors we asked use standard designs and units etc and would/could do the layout we wanted due to 'not being able to get the parts' or similar (we suspected that sometimes this was really 'it's too much trouble').Those that would would have charged as much as a ready converted van. Advice therefore is to check what you want isn't already out there or if one could be adapted to fit your needs before embarking on what could be a costly mistake.

We did consider self build but for various reasons this was not practical.
