Hi, suggestions and advice needed! I am seriously considering taking my MH to the States for 3 to 4 months and driving Route 66 and then up to Vancouver and then back to the East Coast again via The Lakes. Yes a long trip but one my partner and I really want to do.
Has anyone on this site done it?
Hiring a MH out there is pretty expensive and shipping my Chausson out there costs about the same, I anticipate it will be a 8-9000 mile trip
Any suggestions would be gratefully received!!
We spent 6 months travelling around the USA in 2000, did a total of 15,000 miles, beginning and ending in Atlanta. I actually bought a used MH, 10 years old with 28000 miles on the clock, for 15,000 dollars and sold it for the same price before we came home.
At the time the insurance was quite reasonable, as was breakdown insurance from AAA (AAA also issue free maps and campground guides).
I would imagine that the cost of shipping your own MH over and paying extra to your own insurers will be very high so it might be worth considering buying over there.
Hi, My brother was going to do the US in his VW T4 this summer,. Shipping just over a grand - not a problem. The big stumbling block was getting insurance - not a chance ! He gave up and decided to fly and hire instead. Or as badger54 advises buy a second hand one and sell before leaving
I have been RVing ( as we call it in the USA ) 4 to 6 months every year since 1993. We have also toured with a campervan in Europe 4 times (4 months each time )
We toured Ireland last year and are headed to UK this year. We own a RHD Mercedes now stored in Amsterdam and Have a New Dodge Ram diesel with a 26 foot fifth wheel sitting in my daughters yard in California.
Now back to the posters subject.
Join www.rvnet.com The Good Sam club for campers in the USA. It is free and has thousands of members. You will get any question answered there. I do believe about any
insurance company in the USA will write insurance for your UK camper with little trouble ( post the question on the RV Net forum )
Be cautious as some of your answers you receive will not be 100% correct.
How I started my Europe camping was meeting my Netherlands friend on the RV Net forum in 2004 he has shipped his RV to the USA mainland and has toured as you are thinking of doing. I will e-mail him and find out how he arranged his insurance coverage and post the answer here within a day or so.

If you are planning to visit/camp in National Parks and National Forests etc., and I would certainly recommend that you do, then invest $80 in an annual pass rather than pay individual entrance fees. The pass will cover any passengers in your MH.
The alternative to these campgrounds are the commercial sites which in my experience are soul-less places with ranks of RV`s lined up in rows. Many State Parks have campgrounds as well.
Look also at joining AAA (American Automobile Association ) as they will provide you with free maps and campsite guide-books as well as breakdown cover. When we were there in 2000 I paid $115 for a years membership, and when I cancelled at the end of our 6 month trip they refunded me half of the fee. On the first day of our membership I had a front tyre blow, and they sent out a garage to jack my MH up and put the spare on.
Just one more though about insurance. We insured our MH for a year but, again, when I cancelled the policy after 6 months they refunded the full un-used 6 months unlike companies here in the UK who would give you a much smaller refund, so the insurance costs may not be as high as you think.
Thanks, I'm so pleased I found this forum, answers have been really useful. I'm planning on taking my own MH as it cost me £35k so why leave it parked up here and spending more money on hire or purchasing another
